PUTRAJAYA: The present petrol prices will remain until the end of the month as the Government is sticking to its decision to review pump rates on a monthly basis.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad said the twice-monthly review talked about earlier was only a suggestion and the Cabinet had not made any decision on the matter.
“Since the last review was only 12 days ago, the next petrol price review will only be done at the end of the month. However, the Government will continue to monitor the global fuel price closely,” he told The Star yesterday.
On Aug 22, the Government lowered the price of petrol to RM2.55 a litre and diesel to RM2.50 a litre. Shahrir insisted the decision was to relieve the burden on the rakyat and had nothing to do with the Permatang Pauh by-election on Aug 26.
The Government had decided to review fuel prices earlier than Sept 1 due to the rising inflation rate.
On June 4, prices were raised to RM2.70 a litre and RM2.58 a litre for petrol and diesel respectively.
He said consumers, particularly those owning motorcycles and smaller capacity cars, should be wise in choosing the type of petrol for their vehicles, now that the difference in prices for RON97 and RON92 was more substantial. RON97 is priced at RM2.55 a litre while RON92 is 15 sen cheaper a litre.
