PPP says it again, will leave if ISA not amended by next elections

The People's Progressive Party has repeated its ultimatum to the Barisan Nasional (BN) that it will leave the coalition if the Internal Security Act (ISA) is not amended before the next general elections.

"Our stand is loud and clear. We urge the PM to amend the the ISA as it is the sentiment and wish of the rakyat. If not, there is no point staying in BN," said senior vice president Datuk Lee Heng, who chaired a supreme council meeting today.

He added that this would have to be by the next general elections.

BN chairman Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi had said that PPP were free to leave.

Lee also clarified to reporters the chronology of events leading to the PPP's ultimatum. He said that there was a call by the Wanita and Youth wings to abolish the ISA at their annual congress.

President Datuk M. Kayveas had then asked the government to compromise by amending the law that allows for detention without trial, failing which the PPP would have no further reason to remain in BN.

Lee, who represented the party in Kayveas' absence - the president is currently in the United States - claimed that no discussion of the issue had occurred in the BN supreme council meeting on Tuesday.

"The PM's statement was nothing more than a mere reply to the media on PPP's choice to leave as he has no plans to amend the ISA. He never asked PPP to leave BN," Lee said.

"Therefore, PPP will cross the bridge when we come to it," he added.

Lee was further quizzed on why it insisted on staying if Abdullah had asserted that he would not amend the ISA.

"We will still urge and not give up yet. We see some changes such as the Bills tabled yesterday," he said referring to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and Judicial Appointments Commission bills.

"This has also led to the BN convention which is to gather ideas and suggestions from component parties," he added, referring to the February summit.

Vice president Datuk Maglin D'Cruz added that PPP had no plans to leave and join Pakatan Rakyat. He said the party did not simply want to win seats in elections and if it wanted to, it could have joined the opposition long ago.

"The people were so angry with BN they voted for anybody," he reasoned.

Lee also brushed off a statement by Umno deputy president hopeful Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, who had asked the party to leave immediately instead of waiting for the general elections.

"He is just campaigning for his party polls. It is normal, we do not feel anything," Lee said, referring to the Umno polls in March.

  1. MCA,gerakan and SAPP had voiced out their feeling.SAPP has left the BN building.and now it's time for PPP to steal the limelight.

i think PPP knows very sure ISA is not gonna be amended just because of their mere threat.i dont know what's PPP planning right now.the PPP advisor said that they're not going to leave BN any soon.

  2. i guess for Kayveas it's better to make a fuss out something and be remembered rather than do nothing and be forgotten.there's no way the govt gonna amended the ISA for the sake of PPP.perhaps PPP is just using ISA to gain popularity in the eye of the public.
