Police report against Dr M for 'causing economic woes'

A salesman has accused former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s past and present actions for having caused Malaysia to suffer from economic problems.

Wee Fwen Szuh, 32, from Gombak, Selangor made the allegations in a police report at the Gombak district police headquarters at 11.12am yesterday.

The report starts off by saying that Wee represents a group of concerned citizens who wants the police to investigate Mahathir for “merosakan dan menjahanamkan (spoiling and destroying)” the economy.

Wee states in his report that Mahathir did so by approving bailouts for Pewaja Steel for RM13 billion, a RM2 billion bailout for a shipping consortium owned by his relative and bailing out Malaysian Airlines.

Enriching Son

Wee also accused Mahathir of enriching his second eldest son Mokhzani. He claimed in the report that Mokhzani is one of the top 10 richest individuals in Malaysia.

“Dr Mahathir has also made sweeping statements against Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to the point that the economy is now affected,” he added.

According to Wee, the issues which Mahathir had raised were Abdullah’s involvement in the ‘Oil-for-food’ scandal and campaigning against Umno and Barisan Nasional.

“(Mahathir) made statements that the people should reject Umno and Barisan though he was campaigning for his son Murkhriz. His actions has caused uneasiness among Malaysians,” he added.

Malaysiakini had obtained a copy of the report but repeated attempts to contact Wee for clarification were unsuccessful.

AirAsia may go private

AirAsia, the region's largest low-cost carrier, said Saturday it is exploring "various options", following a newspaper report that it may soon be privatised.

"We have continuously been exploring various options at both shareholders and company level," Kamarudin Meranum, group deputy chief executive officer told AFP.

"There is nothing to confirm at the moment," he said in response to the report in business newspaper The Edge.

"(AirAsia) has generated a lot of interest but there has always been scepticism about its business model from investors looking at short term returns," the weekly cited an unnamed source as saying.

Kamarudin said the management was focused on ensuring the carrier, a listed company, remained profitable during challenging times.

"We are the controlling shareholders. We still feel the company has a lot of potential. We are a fairly young carrier," he said.

AirAsia had room to expand and was concentrating on building an infrastructure to ensure growth and profit, he added.

But Kamarudin said since AirAsia was listed, "we must be cautious of any statements we make in relation to any development within the company".

Load Factors Fall

AirAsia's controlling shareholder is Tune Air Sdn Bhd, which held 30.7 percent of its shares as at end-March this year.

Tune Air's shareholders are AirAsia chief executive officer Tony Fernandes and Kamarudin himself.

Global airlines are expected to post a combined loss of US$5.2 billion in 2008 on a "toxic" combination of high oil prices and falling demand, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned last month.

air asia plane 280907Passenger load factors - the ratio of arriving and departing passengers to arriving and departing seats - fell to 79.2 percent from the 81 percent recorded over the same period last year as capacity growth outpaced demand, it said.

Since beginning of the year, AirAsia shares have lost 23 percent while the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index shed 30 percent.

AirAsia said in August its net profits plummeted 95 percent in the second quarter compared to a year ago, blaming high fuel costs and foreign exchange losses.

The company, launched in December 2001 with just two aircraft, has become the region's biggest low-cost carrier and been imitated by national carriers and other low-fare start-ups.

Raya reports: Hindraf to sue Utusan

The Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) is set to slap local Malay daily
MCPX
Utusan Malaysia
with a million ringgit suit over its reports and commentaries yesterday on the movement.

It is now discussing the matter with its lawyers and would file the suit soon, national coordinator RS Thanenthiran said

According to him, Hindraf is very disturbed by the Utusan reports which he claims were tainted by lies and distorted facts on the movement’s visit to the prime minister’s Hari Raya open house in Putra World Trade Centre on Wednesday.

He said Utusan front page report yesterday under the headline – ‘Hindraf Keterlaluan’ (Extreme Hindraf) was unfair and communal, and seems to suggest that the movement was made of extremists out to disrupt Muslim festivals and pour scorn on Islam.

Criticising another article - Baharom Mahusin's commentary in his ‘Cetusan’ column in the same edition, Thanenthiran said the writer was unfair in his criticisms, was also inciting racial hatred and instigating communal conflict.

pm open house 011008 small hindrafHindraf was particularly offended by Baharom’s comment which stated that ‘ Kalau penyokong Hindraf melakukan penghinaan seumpama itu di kawasan-kawasan pendalaman yang menjadi kampung halaman orang Melayu, mereka sudah pun diajar tentang makna dan akibat berperangai kurang ajar.’ (If Hindraf supporters pour such insults in the interior areas dominated by Malays, they would have been taught a lesson on the meaning and consequence of misbehaviour.)

Thanenthiran asked, "What is the writer trying to instigate here?
‘Communal conflict? Racial hatred?".

"Baharom’s comment was most unprofessional and unethical", Thanenthiran told a press conference in Butterworth.

No Visit In Kepala Batas

Due to the negative publicity given to its Hari Raya visit on Wednesday, Hindraf had cancelled its plan to pay a visit to Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's open house in Kepala Batas, Penang today (Saturday) merely to avoid being wrongly accused again of ‘causing disturbances.’

The movement does not want its noble anti-ISA cause and humble pleas to the government to release its detained leaders to be politicised by certain irresponsible quarters.

Five Hindraf leaders - P Uthayakumar, 47, T Vasanthakumar, 35, M Manoharan, 47, R Kenghadharan, 41, and V Ganabatirau, 35 are currently detained under the Internal Security Act since last Dec.

Thanenthiran called on all Hindraf activists and supporters from the northern states not to attend the open house, insisting however that the movement was not cowed by the unfair criticisms made by government ministers and certain segments of the media.

He slammed Ministers Syed Hamid Albar and Shafie Apdal for distorting facts and lying to the public about the event.

"They lied that we submitted a memorandum to the prime minister and were wrong to equate our visit with an insult to Malays and Islam," he said, adding that Hindraf has always advocated racial harmony and unity among Malaysians.

He reiterated that Hindraf has notified the prime minister's office of the movement’s intention and purpose to visit his open house during Hari Raya by submitting an official letter to Abdullah’s senior personal assistant Ahmad Yaakob.

"Ahmad acknowledged receipt of the letter and told us that Hindraf was also welcomed to attend the open house," he said, adding that he was bemused with Abdullah’s claim to the media that he knew nothing about it.

Botak Ugut HINDRAF

KUALA LUMPUR 3 Okt.

“Jangan uji banyak sangat tahap toleransi, mereka kena fikir perasaan orang lain. Janganlah hingga melampaui batas.

Zaid: Minister For The Wrong Reason

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 — Amid widespread speculation over his political future, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has criticised his own party Umno for contributing to race relations problems.

He also urged Umno to engender a more fair-minded administration, and lead the Malays towards having better race relations with non-Malays.

Speaking to the mass-circulation Chinese-language Sin Chew Daily in his most extensive interview since resigning as a member of the Cabinet recently, Zaid also called for more open debates over "sensitive issues”.

He also pointed out that the results of the March general election were a clear message from the people that they wanted change, but the government had failed to change.

The former minister in the Prime Minister's Department, who resigned in protest against recent Internal Security Act arrests, said he had joined the government for the wrong reasons.

"I became a minister for the wrong reason. That reason was reform, but I have failed.

"I thought they would no longer use the ISA. I thought the government would be more open to the rule of law and the constitution, but I was wrong."

There has been, in recent weeks, intense speculation over the political future of Zaid, but the Umno man did not address the issue in his interview with the Chinese-language daily.

But he was highly critical of the "culture of fear" in Malaysia, which he appeared to blame on Umno and the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.

"When we face an issue we cannot discuss it, we cannot debate it. We only use fear or we take to the streets. That is not the way things are done in a mature society," he said.

He said the leadership style of "those with political power" had resulted in race relations being a sensitive issue even after 50 years of independence.

The former minister said race politics had been constantly used because it was easy to get support that way.

"Umno feels that it is a party needed by the Malays. Umno leaders keep telling the Malays that they are constantly in danger and therefore need Umno.

"They always feel that only they know what is good for the Malays."

He said there was no need for "real Malays" to feel any fear or insecurity.

The real question, he said, was that too many people did not understand or respect the historical fact that for the last 100 years, the Malays, Chinese and Indians have contributed to nation-building.

He said Malaysia's status today as the 19th largest trading nation in the world was due to the contributions of all races.

Zaid also felt that under today's circumstances, a "May 13" race riot is not likely to happen again.

"I am not afraid of the Chinese being smart, because I too am smart. We keep talking about the Chinese having more shops and how we should be worried. The fact is we should not be worried. We should think of how to catch up," he said.

He added that it was no longer necessary for "one party to represent one race" anymore.

Other half of money-flow story

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim thought he could take a swipe at the government at a forum in Hong Kong recently when he said that for the first time, Malaysian investment abroad had exceeded inward foreign investment in 2007.

However, it is not as alarming as it sounds. Anwar only told the audience half the story. The document he quoted from — the bulky United Nations Conference on Trade and Development's World Investment Report 2008 — should have been quoted in context.

What Anwar left out was the fact that both Malaysia's inflows and outflow growth had been positive, with outflows growing faster than inflows. Since early 2000, the foreign direct investment inflow and outflow gap has been narrowing, reaching near parity in 2006.

This trend was in line with what was happening in many of the developing economies in South, East and Southeast Asia. FDI outflows in these regions reached a new high of US$150 billion.

Malaysia
's outflow alone surged 82 per cent to more than US$10 billion. In terms of FDI stock, the trend towards reverse investments was also reflected in a 61 per cent spike in outward stock. In the same period, inward stock grew 42.5 per cent.

FDI outflow from Malaysia is not capital flight. It is the outward flow of funds by increasingly savvy home-grown transnational companies (TNCs) with strong balance sheets and confidence, which have decided to diversify outwards.

The very same thing happened to India in 2007 when Indian companies pumped US$15 billion into overseas ventures — surpassing foreign direct investment inflows in the country.

The Unctad report mentioned the growing number of TNCs in developing nations that are playing an increasingly prominent role in the infrastructure development of other developing countries.

Of the top 100 non-financial multinational firms from developing countries ranked by foreign assets in 2006, Malaysian giants Petronas, YTL Corporation, Genting, Telekom, Sime Darby and Maxis featured prominently.

The favourable economic situation at home in 2007 led many of these Malaysian giants to invest vigorously abroad. Some companies reinvested super profits from the commodities boom abroad.

Many of these multinational companies also took advantage of the ringgit's strong performance in 2007, which saw it increase in value from RM3.53 to RM3.31 to the US dollar.

Looking back, the quantum leap in FDI outflow also happened between 1993 and 1996 when the ringgit appreciated from RM2.70 to RM2.52 to the dollar.

It is still questionable whether the trend will continue. If it does, it would be good for Malaysia. It will be able to hedge its bets against a potential weakening of the ringgit, the downward trend of commodity prices and increasing costs at home due to spiralling inflation.

However, before Malaysia Inc starts to celebrate its status as a global player, it has to remember that the biggest overseas investor of all — the United States — is also the biggest FDI recipient.

Malaysia
has to try its best to attract FDI amidst heavy competition from other developing countries. Its fall on the Inward FDI Performance Index to 71st position last year from 67th in 2006 is a cause for concern, even as its FDI inflow increased by 39 per cent to just over US$8.5 billion.

The political crisis in Malaysia has pushed the local stock market index from an all-time high of 1,524 points in January to just above 1,000. The cut in projected growth rates to 4.6 per cent by the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research amidst an inflation rate of 8.5 per cent is cause for concern for many foreign investors.

So, if Anwar ever wants to take a swipe at the government, he should at least remind himself that his attempts to overthrow the government by encouraging party hopping have in part caused political uncertainty and contributed to the decrease in foreign investments into the country.

Why Teresa Kok is the target

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 — She has been villified as a Chinese chauvinist and portrayed as anti-Muslim. She was detained one week under the Internal Security Act for allegedly stirring up religious sentiments. And last week, unknown assailants threw a Molotov cocktail into the compound of her family home in Kuala Lumpur.

But ask DAP Member of Parliament Teresa Kok why she has become the target of a smear campaign in recent months and she will probably be hard pressed for an answer.

And those who know her insist she is anything but a chauvinist or an enemy of Islam that her detractors claim she is.

When Kok was detained under the ISA, even Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, who quit the Cabinet as de facto Law Minister partly in protest against the use of the law, said of her: "I know Teresa personally and I cannot see her as anti-Islam."

While Zaid was the only Umno member who spoke out publicly, he was not the only one who viewed the recent ISA detentions of Kok and a female journalist, who was released after 18 hours, as unwarranted.

"Look, everyone who knows her (Kok) knows she is not a bigot or a chauvinist. This makes the government look bad," one MP from Umno said.

In fact, it was some of Kok's political opponents in Parliament — from the ruling Barisan Nasional — who met with government officials in private to plead for her release. Such is Kok's popularity that when she made her first public appearance at a press conference hours after her release on Sept 19, she received a standing ovation from reporters.

It is probable that Kok, who won her Seputeh parliamentary seat in Kuala Lumpur with a 36,492-vote majority — the biggest — in the March elections, could win with an even bigger margin if polls were held today.

To her supporters, she is a hero who has been wronged.

It was alleged that she had abused her position as an MP and a member of the Selangor state government to direct a mosque to reduce the volume of its public address system during prayer times because it was disturbing non-Muslims living nearby.

The allegation, made by former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Khir Toyo, and highlighted in the Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia newspaper, was found to be untrue. Even the mosque committee came out to publicly deny the allegation. Still, she was detained by the police.

The attacks have not stopped despite her release. Utusan Malaysia has made her, in her own words, a "cover girl" since her release. After she complained about the allegedly low quality of food served during her detention, comparing it to dog food, she has been chastised repeatedly in the newspaper.

Kok, known for her multiracial stand, has been determined more than ever to flaunt it since her arrest.

Following her release, she has been attending breaking-of-fast functions almost nightly during the just-ended fasting month of Ramadan.

But even that has become the subject of attacks by Utusan Malaysia.

Last week, Kok was criticised in the newspaper for "wearing a skirt to a mosque". The article appeared to suggest that she was wearing something outrageous and that her attire caused serious discomfort among Muslims present at the function.

However, facts suggested otherwise. Kok wore a long-sleeved dress which came down almost to her ankles. She also did not enter the mosque, remaining instead in its compound.

One of Kok's Malay-Muslim supporters said: "I don't understand why she is being targetted. She is usually so sensitive to the religious obligations of Muslims it is almost ridiculous. She usually takes great pains to tell me what I can or cannot eat when we are out that I find it hard to believe she would be anti-Islam."

Ultimately, the smear campaign could be attributed to the fact that Kok and a number of leaders from the Chinese-dominated DAP have taken pains to reach out to Malay-Muslim voters.

As a member of a party who is part of three state governments — along with its Malay partners in the Parti Keadilan Rakyat and Pas — DAP leaders like Kok have been reaching out more than ever, and successfully, to Malay voters.

This is undoubtedly a political threat to the ruling coalition led by Umno.

The attacks against Kok and the attempts to portray her as a Chinese chauvinist who is anti-Islam represent a crude attempt at undermining the credibility and viability of the opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, as a viable multiracial alternative to BN.

But targetting Kok, known for her congeniality as much as anything else, may well backfire.

Tiada Syarat Atau Tekanan Dalam Isu Hindraf, Kata Samy Vellu

BURSA MALAYSIA: KL Shares Likely To Be Lower Next Week

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia is likely to be lower next week as investors are expected to take a cautious stance over the developments in the US financial crisis, dealers said.

They said the benchmark Composite Index is however expected to stay above the 1,000 level despite the uncertainties in the US economy with support seen from institutional investors.

The market will also be watching the share price movement of Maybank, which fell close to a five-year low on Friday.

During the week just ended, the market was mainly lower as most investors stayed away due to the festive holidays and as such not much activity was seen.

The market was also closed on Wednesday and Thursday for the Hari Raya celebration.

Maybank's shares which resumed trading on Friday after being suspended on Monday and Tuesday, fell close to the five-year low following the completion of its acquisition of a 55.6 per cent equity interest in PT Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII) for RM4.26 billion (SGD$1.77 billion).

It closed on Friday 30 sen lower at RM6.60, after chalking up a low of RM6.50.

While the acquisition would enable Maybank to be the largest foreign bank in Indonesia and the fifth largest overall, the market was unhappy as the purchase price was considered too high despite a rebate from the sellers.

Maybank had announced on Tuesday that Fullerton Financial Holdings and Kookmin Bank, the stakeholders of the BII shares, had agreed to provide a combined rebate of RM758.9 million (SGD$315.2 million) for the total purchase consideration.

The arrangement resulted in the implicit price payable per BII share reduced to Rp433 from Rp510.

An analyst said the deal remained expensive despite the rebate.

He said investors did not view the acquisition positively in view of the current market situation, especially with the financial turmoil in the US credit market.

On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the KLCI declined to 3.83 points to 1,016.70 from 1,020.53 the previous Friday.

The Industrial Index slipped 5.13 points to 2,226.57 from 2,231.70, the Finance Index decreased 41.83 points to 8,219.99 from 8,261.82 and the Plantation Index lost 267.85 points to 4,734.59 from 5,002.44.

In the Financial Times Stock Exchange-Bursa Malaysia (FTSE-BM) Index series, the FBMEmas shed 16.81 points to 6,744.91 from 6,761.72, the FBM30 fell 9.20 points to 6,562.92 from 6,572.20, the FBM2BRD slipped 1,021.84 points to 3,974.63 from 4,996.47 but the FBMMDQ increased 974.94 points to 4,932.17 from 3,957.23.

Overall, activities were reduced compared with the previous week as the market only saw trading for three days.

Total volume for the week decreased to 973.654 million shares valued at RM2.019 billion compared with last week's 1.930 billion shares worth RM3.557 billion.

The Main Board volume eased to 820.431 million units valued at RM1.992 billion from 1.657 billion units worth RM3.490 billion previously.

Volume on the Second Board declined to 37.543 million shares valued at RM15.184 million from 93.257 million shares worth RM45.928 million the week before.

On the Mesdaq market, volume fell to 29.051 million units valued at RM9.027 million from 66.606 million units worth RM16.042 million previously.

Call warrants fell to 86.630 million shares valued at RM3.173 million from 112.755 million shares worth RM5.143 million last week.

Direct business deals slipped to 158.112 million units valued at RM357.291 million from 413.968 million units worth RM636.851 million previously.

Teresa’s picture ripped out from Raya banner

A BANNER put up by Kinrara assemblyman Teresa Kok for Hari Raya was found cut up on Sunday morning.

The banner had a picture of her and Puchong MP Gobind Singh. Her picture was cut out but Gobind’s was left intact.

It was put up in Jalan Puchong, near the entrance of Kampung Pasir Baru Puchong.

Vandalised: The banner with Teresa’s picture cut out.
“My friend, who was on his way to the mosque for prayers saw it and informed me. I rushed over to the scene and called Teresa’s assistant Balakrishnan Debarajan immediately,” said Gobind’s political assistant Shamsudin Yusof.

Balakrishnan then made a police report at the Bukit Puchong police station.

Teresa is away in Sarawak on a business trip.

Later, Gobind, at a press conference, condemned the act of vandalism.

“This is disheartening. The act of putting up this banner to wish our Muslim community Selamat Hari Raya is sincere,” he said.

Gobind urged the Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar to take a personal interest and speed up the investigations.

“We don’t want more tension. No matter what your political belief is, there must be tolerance when it comes to celebrations,” he said.

For this festive season, Teresa and Gobind have put up 46 banners and buntings with two different designs in Puchong. So far only one has been vandalised.

Kongres lulus pakej ekonomi RM2.4 trilion, Bush terima segera

What Pak Lah and we must do

Recent political developments in Malaysia suggest that the reverberations from the March 8 electoral earthquake are still strong.

The decision of Umno president Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to expedite the transfer of power to his deputy, Najib Abdul Razak, is perhaps one of the more significant of those reverberations. Umno and its coalition partners in the Barisan Nasional had suffered an unprecedented setback in the 12th General Election.

The BN not only lost its two-third majority in the federal parliament for the first time in history but was also ousted as the ruling party in four states - Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor - besides failing yet again to regain control of Kelantan.

After such a colossal debacle, it was not surprising that many people expected Abdullah to assume full responsibility for the ignominious performance and to quit gracefully as Umno president, BN leader and prime minister

Kenapa Aku Bantah "REPLIKA@BERHALA@TUGU" DSAI..?

"MAMPUKAH KITA UNTUK MENGHADAPI SITUASI YANG BAKAL BERLAKU DIKEMUDIAN HARI NANTI?"... tepuk dada tanya selera...

Hebat kan??? sebuah negara Islam dengan jolokan "Country Of Replica"...
WOW...!!!

Y.B Amiruddin saari, Y.B manikavasagam (MP KAPAR), Y.B Sivarasah (MP SUBANG) dan Y.B William Leong (M.P SELAYANG).

aku setuju sangat2...kami ni semua penyokong.. bukan penyembah...

Cakap pasal berhala.... tapi berhala/replika saper ni ek? p/s..DSAI punya ni tengok mcm flat dan lukisan je....yang ni 3D tembaga pulak tu..

asri rahman -

Assalamu'alaikum para netters budiman....Idea siapa agaknya memacak replika DSAI tu...!? Turunkan segera 'menda alah' tu..!? Dengarlah suara kami wahai pemimpin PR dan para cerdik pandai ilmuwan agama Islam dlm PR...!diciplak dr Sdr Omar:-...kami ni semua penyokong.. bukan penyembah...

aku pun setuju...xnak replika...xnak berhala...

Arman Syah Anas -
laaa kira tipulah ni...isk isk isk...y buat tu org melayu keer sah nk kumpul dosa balik kot pas posa...nsb baik ade y dr batu caves bgth.. lau x,kami caya jee lah sampai mati
