Squabble over 'exodus' of Penang MIC members
At a press conference this afternoon, state MIC legal advisor N Ahilan questioned the authenticity of PKR’s claim that some 5,000 people, including 3, 500 from Bayan Baru MIC, had joined the opposition party.
He denied that Bayan Baru MIC had lost members, saying he suspects that sacked division chairperson M Nganasegaran may have obtained particulars from the electoral roll and “planted their names without their knowledge” in PKR membership application forms.
Ahilan challenged PKR and Nganasegaran to substantiate their claim, especially since the Penang Pakatan Rakyat government espouses competency, accountability and transparency.
“We challenge both to publicly display the forms submitted by these members to prove the claim,” he said.
Only one branch chief from Bayan Baru division was at the press conference - Sungai Dua leader K. Arumugam. Others present, including Ahilan, are from the Bukit Gelugor division.
In an immediate response, an angry Nganasegaran, the former state MIC assistant secretary, took a swipe at Ahilan for not getting his facts right.
He said eight branches were closed in Bayan Baru as a result of the crossover, each with 100 to 500 paid-up members. His now-defunct branch, Sungai Nobong Kechil, had some 400 members.
“Anyway who is Ahilan to raise this question when other senior state MIC leaders have kept silent?” asked Nganasegaran.
He accused Ahilan of trying to gain political mileage to enhance his chances of taking over as state MIC assistant secretary.
Decision Based On 'Current Realities'
Nganasegaran explained that he had switched to PKR because of current realities, as people want multi-racial rather than mono-ethnic representation in politics.
He laughed off Ahilan’s challenge to prove the claim, saying the latter should “show more political maturity when issuing statements”.
“Which political party has ever revealed its membership (details) to rival parties?” he asked.
Nganasegaran had been sacked by party president S Samy Vellu (left) on Oct 8 for allegedly “working against party interests by cooperating with opposition parties during the March general election”.
He, however, described Samy Vellu’s decision as arbitrary and a “verdict by a hanging judge in a kangaroo court”.
After the closure of the Bayan Baru branches, the state MIC now has 181 branches with some 25,000 members. Five of these are in Bayan Baru, with some 700 members.
State MIC chief Dr K Rajapathy, who has taken charge as acting divisional chairperson, will appoint a pro-tem committee to lead Bayan Baru until the division elections next March.
He plans to carry out several activities soon to revive the flagging division, boost its membership and restore its relevance to Bayan Baru people.
Mahkamah Benar Raja Petra Dirawat Pakar Ikut Prosedur ISA

Mukhriz: A sign that grassroots want change
Met at the Parliament lobby today, the son of former premier and Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad said “they see that I represent (change)”.
“I’m hoping those divisions that have not yet conducted their respective meetings will nominate (me), if they too want change,” said Mukhriz, 44.
On a lighter note, he quipped that he was more keen to see what the opposition has to say about the endorsement he has received to date.
“Now they see there’s movement within Umno Youth for this change and that we are ready to face them in any by-election and general election,” said the Jerlun MP.
Although he has fellow-aspirants Khairy Jamaluddin and Dr Mohd Khir Toyo trailing in the race already, Mukhriz said he is certain that they will qualify to contest the post in the party polls next March.
“It’s still a long way (off). There are still more than 130 divisions that have not yet held their meetings. I’m very certain they (Khairy and Mohd Khir) will qualify in the end,” said Mukhriz.
Over the weekend, Khairy received 19 nominations while former Selangor menteri besar Mohd Khir received 12.
Candidates for the Umno Youth chief’s post need 20 percent or 38 nominations from the 191 Umno divisions in order to be eligible for the contest.
'No' To Single Party Idea
On another matter, Mukhriz disagreed with the idea of allowing people to join Barisan Nasional (BN) as direct members, as proposed by coalition chairperson and premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Saturday.
“I’m afraid I don’t agree with that. I feel that all the component parties have successfully played their role all this while since the inception of the BN.
“I also feel that Umno and the 12 other (component) parties have an important role to play in ensuring that all races are adequately represented in BN without the need to become just one party.”
The proposal is being seen as a way for BN to counter the surging popularity of opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat and Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.
Abdullah had proposed that BN supporters should be entitled to join the coalition without having to be a member of any of component party.
New mechanism for fuel-price adjustment?
“World crude oil prices (change) very quickly, so we need a new approach to handle this. If we wait too long and there is a big drop, then petrol stations will be affected,” Shahrir (left) told reporters in the Parliament lobby.
He was asked to comment on Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s debate on the Budget 2009 in the House earlier today.
Anwar had called on the government to reduce fuel prices sharply in response to the falling global prices.
Shahrir said details of the new mechanism will be discussed at an economic council meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi later today.
Barisan Nasional component party Gerakan had called for a weekly review of oil prices in resolutions adopted at its national congress, which concluded yesterday.
Shahrir had previous said that the government is open to the idea of a fortnightly review.
Monthly Review System
The government had announced on Aug 2 that fuel prices would be reviewed monthly
beginning Sept 1, based on the average global market price and after taking into consideration the fixed domestic subsidy of 30 sen per litre.
In announcing this, Abdullah had pledged that petrol prices for the rest of the year will not exceed RM2.70 per litre.
Asked about the call by Anwar (right) for a fresh budget to be tabled in the House, Shahrir said he is of the view that the need does not arise.
“Any revision can be done as we go along,” he explained.
In his maiden debate on the budget as opposition leader, Anwar and opposition colleagues had called for the discussion to be adjourned and for a fresh budget to be presented.
He explained that the current global financial woes have rendered Budget 2009 outdated. It was tabled in August by Abdullah in his capacity as first finance minister then.
Sejumlah 10.31 Juta Pelancong Asing Dan 17.96 Juta Pelancong Domestik Dicatat Sehingga Jun
TP - Dekat negeri mana paling ramai pelancong pergi ye? Melaka ke? Agaknya ini kot "sumbang"an Datuk Shah Rukh Khan.........

Musa Hitam tells Umno candidates to focus on the economy
"It would be ideal for vice presidential and deputy presidential candidates to debate on the current scenario and what steps should be taken," said Musa.
He added that too much emphasis is being given to party politics, resulting in the people not realizing that the nation is facing a real economic crisis.
"What needs to be done now is the political issues that are too dominating must be reduced, I hope the politicians take this seriously and draft a pre-emptive contingency plan," he told reporters.
When asked what measures should be taken, Musa said: "Luckily and happily I am not in the position to be responsible for that, but I am just urging the government, come on, let put aside your politics, people are excited but they are tired, they don't know it but they are going to feel it."
"There needs to be a demonstration of seriousness and leadership on issues related to the economy. The sooner politicians pay attention to this issue the better," said Musa.
He said that the media has given too much attention to the Umno election.
"We need to focus on bigger problems related to the economic issues," he added.

Mukhriz wants Umno Youth to go back to the basics
Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir today spelled out his reasons for entering the fray which is likely to be a three-way battle.
He wants Umno Youth to go back to its original purpose. "Umno Youth needs to regain their position as a vocal voice within Umno, in that issues that are important to the young need to be brought up by Umno Youth.
"It has not been adequately addressed in the past four years," he added.
He said it was clear to him that the young generation of voters rejected Umno as seen in the results of the March 8 general elections and confirmed in the parliamentary by-election for Permatang Pauh two months ago when opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim won by a majority of over 15,000 votes.
"I feel I have something to contribute to the wing to restore confidence in Umno in particular and BN in general," said the member of Parliament for Jerlun.
Mukhriz noted that the party was in danger of losing at the next general elections if nothing was done to reverse the perception among the young, especially considering that another one million Malaysians would qualify to vote in the next five years.
"It is a fact we have to live with," he said. He explained that there was a "perception gap between them and us".
"I can't say I know what Form 6 students are thinking," he said, referring to the next generation of voters.
He added: "I intend to find out and make sure to connect with them." Mukhriz is running to revamp the membership scheme, making it easier for young voters to register with the party.
"I want to open the membership as much as possible. There is a lot of red tape at present," he said.
However, his platform remains conservative, compared to his rival for the Youth chief post, Khairy Jamaluddin.
The Umno Youth deputy chief said he was running as a "Malaysian," as opposed to that of "Malay".
Asked if he meant that he was in favour of an open party membership system, Mukhriz clarified: "No. Umno is still for Malays. I'm assuming Malays are Muslims but not necessarily so because of Sabah."
He plans to follow up the recruitment drive with re-educating the young, new members on Umno's original purpose.
"After we have them in, we must ensure they are given adequate knowledge of Umno's history, that they understand the struggle for Independence, what was it for," he elaborated.
"We do not want members just for the sake of being members. There is no point if they are completely without the feeling for the struggle," he said.
Asked how he was going to accomplish that, Mukhriz quipped: "By just doing it."
Earlier, in an impromptu press conference, the son of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told reporters that he was certain that Khairy would get enough nominations to run for the Youth chief post.
"I'm certain he will get it. It's still long ways yet. There are 130-plus divisions to go," he said.
Quizzed if Umno should welcome his father back into its fold, Mukhriz quipped: "I'd like that very much."
He added: "Why not if he's willing to help in any way he can to strengthen the party? The environment is conducive for that now."
He showed a spark of his famous father's biting wit when he was asked to comment that the rise of deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak would mark a return to "Mahathirism" according to the rumour mill.
He replied: "Oh, you mean the one that has brought us prosperity all the while? Give that to me any time of the day.
"I have absolutely no problem with that. Whatever -isms it takes to strengthen the economy and give us political stability with no racial issues."

Kulim petition dropped as Zul could join Umno
Zulkifli's likely defection will be a setback for opposition icon Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who has been talking about BN lawmakers joining him in an attempt to unseat the BN federal government.
The first time Kulim MP was absent from Parliament today where Anwar slammed BN for economic mismanagement in light of the global financial crisis.
The lawyer, who has faced controversy recently for leading a group against a Bar Council interfaith forum, was one of the first to defend Anwar when the latter was sacked a decade ago.
PKR has yet to take action against Zulkifli, who said he is a Muslim above anything else. His fellow PKR members, coalition allies and non-Muslims have blasted his action but he has refused to change his stand.
The Alor Star High Court today struck out the Kulim-Bandar Baru election petition when BN withdrew it, ensuring Zulkifli remains as MP.
The BN had filed the petition as it claimed Zulkifli had failed to submit his statement of expenditure from his 2004 general election campaign.
Under the Election Act, candidates who do not submit their statement of expenditure to the Election Commission can be disqualified from contesting in future elections.
The petition was filed by Umno’s losing candidate Abdul Aziz Sheikh Fadzir against Zulkifli and the Election Commission.
In the March 8 2008 general election, Zulkifli won the seat, which has 51,995 voters, by a margin of 5,583.
In the 2004 polls, Zulkifli contested the Kuala Langat parliamentary seat in Selangor but lost to Umno's Dr Shafie Mohd Salleh.

Trust Najib Or You'll Be The Next Victim..!
"I believe in him, that he would be a good person," Abdullah told reporters after delivering a keynote address at the US-Islamic World Regional Forum this morning.
"I want Najib to succeed me, I want all party members to give their support to him and I believe he can be a good leader," he said.
Due to step down next March, Abdullah had also decided against defending his presidency of Umno, the largest political party, clearing the way for Najib, who is both deputy premier and deputy Umno president, to move up the ladder.
The 68-year old Abdullah was referring to an article that appeared on the Malaysia Today website over the weekend, which has once again swivelled the spotlight on Najib, his wife Rosmah Mansor and Altantuya Shariibuu, a 28-year old Mongolian woman who was murdered here in 2006.
The article entiled ‘Abuse of power by the deputy prime minister’ had exposed a series of SMS messages allegedly exchanged between Najib and a lawyer. The lawyer had previously represented Abdul Razak Baginda (left in picture below), a close friend of the deputy premier, who has since been charged for abetting two police officers in Altantuya’s killing.
One of the text messages allegedly sent by Najib said that Razak “will face a tentative charge but all is not lost,” setting off a chain of questions among Malaysians and across cyberspace, where the article has been among the hottest news.
The most asked question has been ‘how could Najib have known when at that point in time Razak had not even been charged?’.
"I cannot believe Najib will want to abuse power," said Abdullah.
Meanwhile, Najib’s supporters have cried foul, accusing his political rivals of trying to sabotage his campaign.
The 55-year old himself has repeatedly denied allegations that he had been involved with Altantuya. His wife too has refuted allegations implying her involvement in the Mongolian woman’s murder case.
So far, Najib has won 28 nominations for the presidency from Umno divisions across the country. He needs at least 58 to stand for election at the party’s annual general assembly next March. At the moment, no meaningful contender has emerged to challenge him for the Umno No 1 post.
Still A Rosy Economy
Najib, who took on the finance portfolio last month, is also facing his first test as finance minister today, when the 2009 Budget is debated at Parliament.
Arch rival Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim fired the first salvo this morning, calling on Najib to table a new spending plan. Citing the rapid deterioration in the global economy, he asked Najib to replace the “outdated budget” proposed by Abdullah on Aug 29.
The debate, which began this morning, is still proceeding at press time.
Meanwhile, Abdullah said Malaysia could withstand the impact of the financial turmoil sweeping across the US, Europe and already reaching parts of Asia, including Singapore - which has already declared a state of recession.
Abdullah also pledged to keep the ringgit on its current managed float regime, adding that the country could ward off economic contagion with its political stability and strong economic fundamentals.
"We have very strong reserves, our surplus is still strong, our domestic savings are also very high and our currency is also stable and not subject to fluctuation," he said.. "There is also no intention to re-introduce capping on our currency.
"We have the strength and the resilience of Malaysians as we have faced it before and our banking system is still strong, there's stability in the country and predictability in terms what's going to develop politically," he said.
The premier is the latest to join in the group of government leaders - including Najib, Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakob and International Trade and Industry Minister Muhyiddin Yassin - who have offered a slew of reassurances to investors.
However, financial experts and civil groups, including Transparency International Malaysia, have lambasted the government for painting a rosy picture and giving insufficient warning to the public of what some believe could be the worst-ever economic shake-up, perhaps even exceeding the misery of the Great Depression of the 1930s.
From Masjid Kota Damansara: Khir Toyo The Great Liar..!
It contains the newspaper clippings and police reports pertaining to the recent controversy of Azan which lead to the arrest of Teresa Kok under ISA. One newspaper clipping shows the statement of Datuk Khir Toyo from the Utusan Malaysia dated 09/09/2008 entitled "Ada Pihak Cuba Halang Laungan Azan".
To sum up the statement, basically Khir Toyo says that DAP has begun to take the upper hands with regards to limiting the practice of Islam in Selangor. He also says that PKR is not strong enough to resist DAP and PAS has chosen to remain silent. He cited the example protest to Azan in Puchong and Kota Damansara.
In another newspaper clipping contains statement from the “Nazir” of the Masjid of Kota Damansara. His name is Ustaz Hasan Basri. Hasan is quoted as saying that there has been no instructions coming from anyone to stop Masjid Kota Damansara to use their PA system. What has happened is that the new PA system was stuck by lightning and they had to operate for a few days without using a PA system.
There is also a copy of police report from Hasan Basri denying any form of interference from any party in the practice of Islam in Masjid Kota Damansara
Later after the prayer I ran into an old friend of mine. I came up to him and deliberately ask him:
“Why did the Masjid committee bowed to Teresa Kok’s demand and stopped using the PA system?”
My friend, name M, grinned and said:
“It’s Khir Toyo that’s supposed to be arrested under ISA and not Teresa Kok. I am a member of the Masjid committee and I can assure u that Teresa is innocent”
M is an Islamist and he wears “kopiah” (skullcap) all the time. His wife wears “tudung” and he is one of those that is easily categorized as an Islamist.
If only the Non Muslims in this country can see M utter the words above, I can assure u that any fears against PAS will be wiped out.
On my way back home, I thought to myself, as long as it is UMNO, it’s always a lie. I recalled a former UMNO man telling me that:
“Even if an UMNO man tells you that “God is one”, don’t believe him. Not because the statement is wrong, but because the person uttering it is an UMNO man”

Lantas kami berdua tertawa bersama.

Pakatan to hold fresh elections after taking over
PKR Penang chief Zahrain Mohd Hashim said it was vital for Pakatan to conduct an electoral process to secure the people's mandate to have the moral rights to govern even though technically the three-party coalition pact need not do so.
"In a democratic process, it was imperative for a ruling party to obtain a strong mandate from the masses after taking over through a parliamentary process," said Zahrain, who is also Bayan Baru MP.
"This is the consensual stand taken by Pakatan leaders that we should hold an election to obtain the people's mandate after taking over Putrajaya," he said.
He was speaking at a press conference during a function to receive
some 5,000 new PKR members, majority of whom former MIC members, at the party's Bayan Baru service centre in Penang today.
Earlier in his speech, Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim said that next
week's parliamentary session would be the last lap for Pakatan to
capture the federal government, helped by defection of more than 31 Barisan Nasional elected lawmakers.
"Monday will kick-start Pakatan's final onslaught to capture the
federal government."
"This will the last round," he told the new PKR members led by former
Bayan Baru MIC chief M Nganasegaran.
Final Push To Topple BN
Anwar, the Pakatan premier designate, however declined to deliberate on his modus operandi to topple the current government, opting to keep his cards close to his chest.
Out of the current 222 parliamentary seats, BN has 138 MPs, Pakatan 82. Three seats are held by independents - two belong to the Sabah Progressive Party while one is held by MP Ibrahim Ali.
Anwar said Pakatan had to go for a final push to topple the Barisan government, adding that he has been beseiged with questions from the public since Sept 16, the original date for his much-trumpeted takeover of the government.
"Everywhere I go people keep asking me when Pakatan is taking over. Some even accused me of lying," he said, brushing aside suggestions that the Pakatan takeover plan was doomed.
"It was not doomed, but has yet to happen," he assured. He has also set the new deadline for the toppling of the BN government by Hari Raya Haji on Dec 8 at the latest.
"We have built our base to go forward - if it does not happen this week or next week, it can possibly happen before the Aidil Adha festival," Anwar had told a crowd on Fridxay.
Zahrain said the opposition alliance had full confidence in Anwar's
promise to take over the federal government soon, confirming that the coming parliamentary session would answer voters' questions.
"I know Anwar for 30 years. He is a man of principle and will deliver
what he promised," Zahrain said.
Outcry over Datukship for Bollywood heartthrob
Shah Rukh Khan has been conferred with the governor's award for promoting Malacca state after filming a movie there and for his contribution to the region's film industry, state officials said in weekend news reports.
The 42-year old heart-throb is among 78 people to get the award in conjunction with the governor's 70th birthday, alongside the country's navy chief, academics, artists and journalists.
"He is a well-loved, well-liked celebrity in Malaysia and he has helped develop the huge, income-earning Bollywood movie industry here," said Mahadzir Lokman, whose events management firm works closely with Indian movie stars here.
"He has also starred in many top Hindi movies filmed on location in Malaysia, which has helped promote the country as a tourist destination," he told AFP.
"This is one of the main reasons he was conferred this honor," he added.
His 2001 movie, "One 2 Ka 4" was filmed at a popular resort in Malacca.
"This resulted in many people visiting Malacca. The award was given in recognition of this," said Malacca chief minister Mohamad Ali Rustam, according to the Star daily.
Kit Siang 'Astounded'
But opposition parliamentarian Lim Kit Siang slammed the move, saying he was "astounded" that the governor would choose to honour the Indian actor, who is now entitled to be referred to by the title Datuk.
"Are there no Malaysian film stars, artists or sports-people who have greater (talent) to be honoured and encouraged as compared to Shah Rukh?" Lim said in a statement.
"I don't think the reason that has been given for making Shah Rukh Khan a Malacca Datuk would impress or convince many that the Bollywood actor-dancer had 'contributed to our tourism industry'," he said.
Malaysia has become a popular location for shooting Indian films, which have a huge following among the ethnic Indians and the majority Muslim-Malays.
Women of all ages - including the wife of deputy prime minister Najib Razak, Rosmah Mansor - are huge fans of the charismatic Shah Rukh, dubbed the "King of Bollywood" here.
Fatimah Tahir, a fan of the star, was stunned at the news.
"I wonder whether Shah Rukh Khan even knows where Malacca is," she told the newspaper.

Gerakan mahu ISA dimansuhkan
Datuk Shah Rukh Khan: Ali Rustam Pertahan Ke"BANGANG"an
Mufti Perlis: UMNO perlu bentuk Majlis Ulama "HadHari"

TP - Kena faham sindiran MAZA tu... sebenarnya dia sindir UMNO...
Mukhriz and Hisham first to check in, Khairy still trails
Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, another son of a former PM, has also secured more than the 19 nominations necessary to contest the party vice presidency.
Khairy has received only 20 nominations so far in what is turning into a proxy battle between his father-in-law, Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi, and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the father of Mukhriz. Former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Khir Toyo has 11 nominations so far.
The race is likely to be a two-horse contest between Mukhriz and Khairy.
Mukhriz's commanding position suggests Dr Mahathir still wields substantial influence in the party.
For the Umno presidency, Datuk Seri Najib Razak is still the only person receiving nominations.
So far, Najib has 24 nominations with none for Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, the only other declared candidate for the post.
For No. 2, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has secured 21 nominations.
Datuk Mohd Ali Rustam has two nominations so far while Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib has one.
None of the other candidates for the deputy presidency have received any support yet.
The early indication seems to suggest overwhelming support for a Najib-Muhyiddin ticket to lead Umno, with the prospect of any official contest slim.
The vice presidents' race still appears open, with Datuk Seri Hishammuddin the first to check in as an official candidate.
Among a raft of contenders, Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamid has 12 nominations while Datuk Shafie Apdal has 11.
Datuk Khaled Nordin managed to garner eight while Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar has six in a tight race so far.
At least six other candidates have also picked up a handful of nominations.

Petisyen ditarik balik, kerusi Kulim-Bandar Baharu kekal PKR

Sidang Dewan Rakyat bermula, Anwar jadi tumpuan
