The government proposes to publish in local newspapers, the names of government officers and staff against whom disciplinary action was taken for misuse of power and other offences, the Dewan Rakyat was told on Thursday.Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum said at the moment, the government only published statistics on the number of officers against whom action was taken, besides the forms of punishment meted out.
He was answering a question from Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi (BNBatu Pahat). Johari said that since 2006, there was a decrease in the number of government officers involved in disciplinary cases.
"Disciplinary cases in the Public Services Department decreased from 714 to 590 cases, local authorities (from 271 to 209 cases) while the Malaysian Armed Forces saw a decrease from 523 to 300 cases.
"However, cases involving the Royal Malaysian Police and Federal Statutory Bodies increased from 340 to 450 cases and 353 to 467 cases, respectively," he said.
Answering a question from Datuk Bung Moktar Radin (BNKinabatangan) on whether the misuse of power and corruption among public sector employees were due to poor welfare, Johari said it was caused by the employees' own attitude.
"If we look at the 979 cases of employees not turning up for work...this is related to their attitude, as well as 938 behavioural offences, 137 drug cases and 85 court cases.
"There is a variety of cases reported and we cannot say that it is related to allowances or additional salaries received by the employees," he said.
