Penjara

Hari raya lagi 8 hari

Isteri yang suami ditahan ISA
Tidak bershopping tahun ini
Simpan duit untuk buat tambang
Pergi ke kamunting di pagi raya

Pintu sel dibuka jam 7.00 pagi
Ke padang menyanyikan lagu memula moon
Bendera dinaikan
Kemudian menunggu tea/roti jam 8.30

Jam 12.00 pintu besar di ketuk makan sampai
Lalu makan
Senin ikan masin
Selasa ayam
Rabu ikan goreng
Khamis ikan masin
Jumaat telor rebus
Sabtu ikan goreng
Ahad daging

Jangan silap faham ketul ayam
Ikan kembung
Ikan jaket jenisnya lain

Jam 2.30 pintu sel tutup hingga 4.00 ptg
Kemudian petang sampai
Buatlah apa sahaja
Jam 7 pintu ditutup kembali hingga esok jam 7 pagi

Badan dikurung pekara biasa
Ramai kita masih terpenjara
Terpenjara dalam penjara yang maha luas
Terpenjara kerana takut hilang kerja
Terpenjara kerana takut berkata benar
Terpenjara kerana ingin membodek menjadi hamba
Terpenjara kerana tidak tahu erti bebas
Terpenjara kerana selesa mengikut kata

Berbondong-bondong macam tikus
Orang ke hulu dia ke hulu
Orang ke hilir dia ke hilir
Orang kata iya dia kata iya
Orang kata hah dia kata hah
Dari lahir ke liang lahad
Mengambil tempat menyibuk diri
Menghabiskan oxigen menjadi stastik negeri
Hidup macam ini lebih baik mati

Dalam penjara
Berulang-ulang berkali-kali
Tapi tak semesti nya membosankan diri
Jika telah mengenal diri sendiri
Tidak ada besi dan jeriji
Dapat menggari pemikiran bebas hakiki

Kisah Mak Cu Timah

Hari Jumaat lepas, lepas sembahyang Jumaat, Pak Cu Razak dan Mak Cu Timah datang kerumah. Sejak pilihanraya lalu, depa dua orang ni langsung tak jenguk kerumah aku. Mungkin malu..mungkin serba salah.

Mak Cu Timah ialah Ketua Wanita Umno cawangan kat kampung aku. Masa berkempen dulu, aku kata Umno akan lingkup, dia kata pembangkang lagi teruk. Bila tiba hari mengundi, Umno menang kat tempat aku, tapi kalah peringkat negeri. Lagi teruk la sakit hati dia kat aku.

Tapi hari Jumaat lepas, dia tengah sesak. Mak mentua dia masuk hospital kat HUKM diKuala Lumpur. Nak pergi…dia tak berani bawa Toyota KE20 keKL. Takat bawa pucuk paku kepasar tani boleh la. Nissan Sunny aku pun lebih kurang macam tu jugak.. wiring dah kaput. Lampu tak bernyala, wiper tak bergerak.

“Tak kan tak ada orang lain kot?” aku tanya kat Mak Cu Timah.

“Deme tak reti jalan Kelumpo. Nanti sesat larat pulak, tup-tup lepas ke Seremban nanti.” jawab Mak Cu Timah.

“Tak kan tak pernah ke Kelumpo kot?” aku tanya.

“Banyak kali juge, tapi kat PWTC je. Tu pun ikut rombongan.” balas Mak Cu Timah.

“Tapi aku cakap betui la, Mak Cu. Aku bukan ada berduit!” aku cakap terus terang.

“Jangan risau le Mat..yang tu semua aku tanggung. Kami nak mintak kamu tolong bawak je.”

“Naik kereta sapa?”

“Nanti kami sewa kereta si Azmi tu.” jawab Pak Cu Razak.

“OK lah. Esok..lepas bersahur kita bertolak.” Aku bagi tau. Punya la seronok depa.

Sabtu pagi, pukul 4 pagi depa dah sampai. “Hoi!! Mengapa awal sangat?” aku tanya.

“Semalam kamu kata lepas bersahur. Jadi lepas bersahur kami datang la.” jawab Mak Cu Timah.

“Mak Cu bersahur pukul berapa?” aku tanya.

“Pukul 3.00″

Memang susah nak berjanji masa dengan orang macam ni. Kata lepas Zohor, depa datang pukul empat. Kata lepas Isya’, silap-silap datang tengah malam.

Bila aku start enjin kereta, tengok-tengok minyak dah sampai “E”.

“Ish!” kata Pak Cu Razak.”Sampai Sungkai cukup le.”

“Ngape mahai benor.” rungut Mak Cu Timah.

“Ini baru tau?” dalam hati aku.

“Kita ni nak terus keHospital ke Mak Cu?”

“Kita singgah dulu kat Bukit Subang. Sementara dah sampai Kelumpo, aku nak nengok adik aku kejap.” kat Mak Cu Timah.

Dari Kuala Kangsar sampai Jelapang..RM3.50. Dari Ipoh sampai masuk Lebuh raya Rawang-Shah Alam…aku pun dah tak ingat…lebih kurang RM20.00. Masuk Guthrie Corridor…RM1.40. Jalan lagi sikit..lagi RM1.40.

'Macam ini…naik bas lagi murah.” rungut Mak Cu Timah.

Sampai kawasan Bukit Subang, aku tanya kat Mak Cu Timah, ” Mak Cu tau ke jalan nak pergi rumah adik Mak Cu tu?”

“Tahun 97!”

Aku boleh senyum saja la.

“Cuba kamu tanya kat orang pam minyak, kot-kot depa tau Rashid kerja guard.”

Aku geleng kepala. Macam mana dia ni boleh jadi Ketua Wanita Cawangan pun aku tak tau. “Kalau tanya Sheh Hasina Wajid mungkin la depa tau” aku bagi tau kat Mak Cu Timah.

Last-last…Mak Cu Timah surrender. “Jom kita ke hospital la”

Keluar Guthrie Corridor, masuk Lingkaran Tengah…RM1.60. Masuk Kesas highway kena lagi RM2.20. Jalan lagi sikit….lagi RM2.20.

“Macam ni nak bunuh orang!” kata Mak Cu Timah.

Sampai kat Awan Besar…aku masuk stesen minyak. “RM50.00 tadi dah habih dah?” tanya Mak Cu Timah. Dia keluar lagi RM50.00.

Sampai HUKM dah dekat pukul 11.00 pagi. Park kereta kat tempat parking, aku bagi tau kat Mak Cu Timah, pukul dua aku tunggu kat tempat letak kereta.

“Kamu nak kemana. Mat?” tanya Mak Cu Piah.

“Nak tidor”

“Kat mana?”

“Kat hotel atas tu. Ada air-cond.”

“Ada hotel jugak kat hospital ni?” tanya Mak Cu Timah. Macam tak percaya.

Aku naik ketingkat 7, Wad Sutera. Kalau lepak kat bawah…guard asyik tanya pasai apa lepak kat situ. Tapi kalau lepak kat Wad Sutera…nurse pun tak berani tanya..sebab yang masuk wad tu semua yang banyak duit. kah..kah..kah.

Cukup pukul dua petang…aku pun balik kekereta.

Kejap-kejap…duit. Kejap-kejap…duit.

“Kat kelumpo ni Mak Cu…nak kencing pun kena duit. kentut je free.” aku menyakat Mak Cu Timah. “Baik duduk dikampung…kurang-kurang pun dapat kain batik free.. rombongan pun tak berhenti..Kelantan…Langkawi.”

Pak Cu Razak diam kat belakang. Aku dah biasa dengan orang Umno kat kampong. Yang jantan takat bising kat kedai kopi. Balik rumah….takut bini.

Sampai Tapah….minyak dah sampai “E” lagi. Aku cakap kat Mak Cu Timah..” Isi dua puluh cukup le Mak Cu.”

Sampai kat rumah…Mak Cu Timah hulur kat aku dua puluh ringgit. Upah jadi drebar.

“Minta maaf la, Mat. Aku ingat pergi Kelumpo cukup dengan dua ratus. Rupanya…tiga ratus pun tak cukup. Minyak denga tol saja dah dua ratus. Sewa kereta lagi seratus. Tu pun nasib baik bulan puasa. Kalau tidak lagi rabak aku.” rungut Mak Cu Timah.

Peristiwa Aneh Malam Lailatul Qadar

Peristiwa berlaku malam 23 Ramadan malam tadi (malam Selasa);

"Lepas basuh pinggan, ikut Abah pergi masjid," kata Abah separuh memerintah.

Aku memandang kepada Emak. Emak angguk sahaja. Maksudnya emak mahu aku ikut Abah solat subuh ke masjid. Jangan melawan.

Nampaknya, aku kena batalkan niat untuk sambung tarik gebar selepas kenyang bersahur. Baru malam tadi sampai dari Sarawak, penat pun tak hilang lagi.

Aku bonceng di belakang. Kami tidak pakai helmet. Kopiah sahaja.

Ganjil.

HINDRAF: Samy Pun Nak Kene Kencing

Raja Petra sent to Kamunting

BREAKING NEWS! updated 5.35pm Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamarudin was sent to the Kamunting Detention Centre in Taiping, Perak, this morning to begin his two-year detention without trial under the Internal Security Act.

raja petra to police station on burma doctor sd 040908 03Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar last night signed the detention order for the blogger to be held under section 8(1) of the tough security law. Under the Act, the initial two-year detention period can be renewed indefinitely.

According to journalists stationed outside the Kamunting detention camp, Raja Petra arrived at 11.50am in a white van with heavily-tinted windows.

"The act by the minister to sign the section 8 order yesterday is completely unacceptable," said Raja Petra's lead lawyer Malik Imtiaz.

The legal team believes the minister’s decision was linked to a habeas corpus hearing in the Kuala Lumpur High Court this morning, which had been filed by Raja Petra's lawyers to secure his release.

A writ of habeas corpus orders the authorities to produce detainees before a judge to determine whether the government has the right to continue holding them.

human rights defender report 020407 malik imtiazSpeaking to reporters later, Malik (left) argued that “the arrest was issued last night to avoid the consequences of this habeas corpus”.

Amarjit Sidhu, another of Raja Petra's lawyers, said the government had pulled a "mean, dirty trick" by issuing the detention order last night.

"The government can now hide behind a veil of secrecy because they do not have to disclose reasons for detaining him," he said.

Senior federal counsel Abdul Wahab Mohamad in his preliminary objection argued that the hearing was rendered academic as the clause under which Raja Petra is now detained supercedes section 73(1) of the ISA, under which he was initially held.

However, Malik countered: “Section 73(1) detention was without basis, unconstitutional and in bad faith… so the minister’s order could only have been the result of enquiry by the police, meaning that the section 73(1) order flows into the minister’s (present) order.

internal security act section 73 bracket 1 and 8 bracket 1 230908“Because it flows, what we say is that the question of whether this section 73(1) detention was lawful is a matter which is relevant for the challenge on the section 8 order.”

Malik pointed out that, if the matter is argued under the section 73(1) order, the court can review the matter objectively and look into the basis of detention.

Still, the legal team will file another suit to challenge the section 8 order - even if the court’s jurisdiction is limited to weighing the procedure only.

Malik said the basis of detention under section 73(1) and section 8(1) is the same.

“(Section 8) is relevant to section 73(1). So if we declare this to be unlawful, we can have a basis to argue that the minister’s detention is not just irregular for procedure - therefore showing the minister has no power to make the order. And that would give a wider basis to argue,” he said.

Judge Suraya Othman told lawyers to make their submissions on Oct 28.

Ex-Minister Attends Hearing

Also making a surprising appearance in the courtroom was former de facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim, who sat next to Marina.

raja petra habeas corpus court 230908 03“He (Raja Petra) writes well, he speaks his mind and we need more people like him," said Zaid (left in photo), who had resigned to protest the use of the ISA to detain Raja Petra and two others on Sept 12.

Zaid said he attended the hearing to show support for the wives of many others being held under the restrictive law.

“We should encourage people to speak out. If (those detained) have done wrong (then) we (should) charge them (in court),” he said.

Zaid also said that freedom of expression and of speech are important values and that “we cannot intimidate with fear”.

Earlier this morning, Raja Petra's wife Marina Lee Abdullah had confirmed the continued detention of her husband.

raja petra habeas corpus court 230908 02 lawyers group“(Police) said my husband had been sent to Kamunting this morning and that he will remain there for two years with no trial.

"This is the worst news I can receive but we will keep fighting for his release,” she told AFP, holding back tears.

“This is very unfair… we have filed our affidavit, they don’t reply to our affidavit for five days… this is ridiculous. This is a political move, it is very clear… he is not a threat to national security - it is bullshit.

“This is dirty foul play by the government as they know that we are in the process of fighting for his release in the court, but I was expecting this.”

raja petra habeas corpus court 230908 01 marina and zaidRaja Petra, 58, has been under police custody in an unknown location since his arrest.

Fellow-detainees Sin Chew Daily senior journalist Tan Hoon Cheng, 33, was freed 18 hours after being arrested, while Selangor senior executive councillor and Seputeh parliamentarian Teresa Kok, 43 was released after seven days.

According to his lawyer J Chandra, Raja Petra was arrested for publishing articles on his news portal which allegedly tarnished the leadership of the country and insulted the sanctity of Islam.

The former newspaper columnist had earlier been charged with sedition and defamation after linking Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife to the sensational murder of a Mongolian woman.

Minister Confirms Detention

Meanwhile minister Syed Hamid confirmed Raja Petra's detention under the ISA, stating that he was satisfied with the reasons given by the police for the blogger's detention.

"The detention is due to Raja Petra's articles that ridiculed Islam which could arouse anger among Muslims.

"The police had recommended his detention and after going through the papers, we are satisfied that there are strong grounds for him to be further detained for two years (in Kamunting)," he said.

This is second time that Raja Petra has been arrested under the ISA.

He was detained under the draconian law in 2001, at the height of the reformasi movement triggered by the sacking and jailing of former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim, who is now opposition leader.

However, he was released by the police after 53 days without being sent to Kamunting detention centre.

Manoharan’s habeas corpus hearing adjourned

KUALA LUMPUR: Hindraf legal adviser M. Manoharan’s habeas corpus hearing has been adjourned to Nov 12, as he wants to conduct the application himself.

Manoharan’s counsel S.R. Sreedevi Naidu said that he had applied for the adjournment which was granted by High Court Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah.

“He wrote to the Home Ministry in a letter dated Sept 15 to apply for him to appear in court to conduct his own habeas corpus application.

“He was informed that his application had been rejected Monday evening, with the reason being that he is a threat to national security,” she told the press Tuesday. She added that the letter was faxed directly to him in Kamunting.

Sreedevi added that in the 1980s, lawyer Karpal Singh had also made such an application during his detention under ISA and it was granted.

“If Karpal Sigh was allowed, why is this application not allowed?” she said.

Karpal Singh, who was also in court Tuesday, also said that the Home Ministry should allow Manoharan to represent himself in court as there was a precedent set by him in 1988.

In his application, Manoharan, who is also the Kota Alam Shah assemblyman, had also requested that he be allowed to attend the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sittings as a six-month absence from the sittings would result in the seat being declared vacant.

In his letter to the detention camp director, he said that he also “does not wish to apply for leave” as advised, as he had “no reason to apply for leave”.

Hishammuddin: Endorsements must reflect sentiment

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 23 — Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein today urged state party leaders to be careful in endorsing candidates for the party elections as endorsements which do not reflect the sentiment on the ground may adversely affect the party's credibility.

"Those who have already made endorsements must be responsible in bringing the support, if not the party's credibility will be questioned," he told reporters today.

However, he said, the state liaison committees can still provide guidance to the divisions before the start of the division meetings next month.

"Everyone can express support but the most important thing is they must respect each other," he said.

Hishammuddin added that traditionally, the state liaison committees have always been making endorsements, but the final decision can only be made by the party grassroots.

"Sometimes, the top leadership can see things that cannot be seen by the grassroots, but at the end of the day, we have to accept their decision," said Hishammuddin.

He was confident that the party elections scheduled to be held in December would not split the party.

Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who was reported to be under pressure to step down before the 2010 deadline, yesterday received the support from Penang and Kelantan Umno to defend his presidency.

The two states also reiterated their support for the 2010 transition plan.

Rasuah: Reformasi Pak Lah Berjaya!

Syed Hamid confirms signing RPK’s detention order

RANTAU PANJANG: Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar on Tuesday confirmed that blogger and Malaysia Today portal editor Raja Petra Kamaruddin has been detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) at the Kamunting Detention Camp, Taiping, for two years.

Syed Hamid said he himself had signed the detention order on Raja Petra on Monday after he was satisfied with the reasons given for his detention.

”The detention is due to Raja Petra’s articles that ridiculed Islam which could arouse anger among Muslims.

”The police had recommended his detention and after going through the papers, we are satisfied that there are strong grounds for him to be further detained for two years (in Kamunting),” he told reporters Tuesday after a visit to the Malaysia-Thai border area, here.

Raja Petra was arrested under the ISA on Sept 12 as he was felt to be a threat to public order and national security. Besides him, two others arrested under the ISA were Seputeh member of parliament Teresa Kok and Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng, but the two were later released.

Syed Hamid, however, said that after the first three months, the authorities would review Raja Petra’s attitude while in detention.

”Then the second review will be after six months, and we’ll see whether he can be released or not,” he added.

Syed Hamid said the people should understand why the Government decided to use the ISA, as what was important was to turn offenders into members of society who could contribute to nation building.

He said to date, he had not received any official proposals to free the other ISA detainees.

”If there are, I will look at them. But again what is more important is for the detainees to change to be able to return to society and together with other citizens, take part in nation building,” he said.

Petra Ke Kamunting

Bekas menteri turut hadir

Tan dibebaskan 18 jam selepas dia ditahan, manakala Teresa dibebaskan tujuh hari kemudiannya.

Battle royal in Umno: Will Najib sink or swim?

updated 2.15pm Speculation is rife that Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will not bow down to pressure and battle for his political life in the coming Umno elections in December.

And should the Umno president receive the necessary nominations to defend his title, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang is wondering who will be the protagonists in the looming 'battle royal' and what are the stakes involved.

abdullah ahmad badawi and najibIn a statement today, the veteran politician also questioned the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Umno's second-in-command Najib Abdul Razak in this imbroglio.

"Will the protagonists in the Umno presidential battle be Abdullah vs Najib or will Najib 'sink or swim' with Abdullah in an Abdullah-Najib battle against the rest?

"What are the stakes involved? This question would be obtuse or even stupid in the past five decades when whoever is Umno president is automatically the prime minister," he said.

But according to Lim, this is no more the case after the two political tsunamis in the past six months - the first on March 8 and second in Permatang Pauh.

In view of this, he said the battle to be the Umno president at the end of the year is no longer automatically about who is to be the next prime minister, but probably the next parliamentary opposition leader.

Supreme Council Meeting

Meanwhile, Lim also commented on the recent Umno supreme council meeting, where it was reported that Abdullah had purportedly come under pressure from several senior party leaders to step down earlier.

anwar ibrahim sodomy allegation saiful bukhari azlan first day in court 070808 lim kit siang 01"Although Umno information chief Muhammad Muhd Taib yesterday slammed as 'opportunists' those who leaked information on matters discussed in the supreme council meeting (which includes Muhammad himself), the facts remain uncontradicted that at last Thursday's meeting, Abdullah was pressured to have a quicker exit plan and not wait until mid-2010 according to his earlier power transition plan with Najib.

"Rafidah Aziz (who joined Muhyiddin Yassin, Hishammuddin Hussein and Shafie Apdal to pressure Abdullah to fast-forward the transition plan) even warned that Abdullah might not be able to secure the minimum 58 nominations (30 percent) required to defend his presidency," he said.

"Abdullah was openly pressured to make known his intentions by Oct 9 when Umno divisions begin nominating candidates for the Umno polls in December," he added.

Going For Broke

However, Lim said two events yesterday marked Abdullah's decision to go for broke in the Umno party polls.

The first, he said, was the public pledge of support for the beleaguered Abdullah by Penang Umno, calling on all the 191 divisions not to rock the boat and honour the 2010 power transition plan.

umno party post polls quota"This is most ironic as it was the Penang Umno which had done the most damage to the credibility, authority and legitimacy of Abdullah as Umno president and prime minister with its open defiance and contempt in giving full backing to Ahmad Ismail in the 'Chinese are penumpang' furore," he pointed out.

The second indication, Lim noted, was Abdullah's statement in Kota Bahru yesterday that Umno grassroots members want the strengthening of the spirit of consensus in the party in line with the leadership transition plan in 2010.

Support For Pak Lah-Najib Combo

In a related development, Malaysian Insider reported that nearly all Umno state chiefs will back the Abdullah-Najib combination for the top two posts in the party.

This decision was purportedly reached after a meeting at Seri Perdana between the prime minister and all but two of the state chiefs, a discussion which ended at 3am this morning.

The meeting, according to the report, was also attended by Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Mansor. It comes a day after Abdullah indicated that he would not bow down to pressure and was sticking to his original plan of defending the party president's position in December.

Yesterday, two states - Penang and Kelantan - have openly thrown their weight behind Abdullah. In so doing, the two pro-Abdullah states hope that this will put pressure on other states to follow suit.

A state chief, who requested anonymity, told Malaysian Insider that Abdullah made it clear that he wanted to stay on to complete several of the reforms he outlined after the March 8 elections.

"Several party officials apparently felt that sticking to the transition plan will allow Umno to concentrate on rebuilding the party and focus on its external enemies.

"There is the fear that a no-holds-barred contest for the top two positions in Umno will not only damage the main contestants in the eyes of Malaysians but also leave an already weakened political party disunited."

Tukar Lagi..!

Minyak Turun? Tok Sah Mimpi La Oi...!!!

The price of oil has jumped by more than $16 to $120.92 a barrel, the biggest one-day gain on record.

There is uncertainty about how the government's plan will work, causing investors to switch to perceived safe havens such as oil.

Others believe that the US government's bail-out plan will help the economy, increasing demand for oil.

Concerns also persist about supply as production in the Gulf of Mexico is still affected by Hurricane Ike.

However, analysts said the US rescue package was key.

"[It] has changed sentiment in the oil market," said analyst Paul Harris from Bank of Ireland.

At one point during trading, the price of oil rose by more than $25. The volatility in the price has been exacerbated by the fact that the contract for the supply of oil in October expires on Monday.

The contract for oil to be delivered in November was not up as sharply. It rose by $6.62 to $109.37 in New York. Last week oil traded as low as $91 a barrel. It had fallen from the peak of $147 a barrel it reached in July.

Counting the cost of Malay conservatism

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, like his cousin, Education Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Hussein, are “bangsawan” (or aristocratic) politicians. To outsiders, it would appear that their rise through Umno has been charmed. In reality, their rise was propelled by a combination of lineage, “noblesse oblige”, education, the personal wealth linked to their family networks (it's safe to say that they know or have connections to everyone of political or economic consequence), glamour and the deft management of party politics.

At their best, they can be the most racially inclusive of figures: cosmopolitan, urbane and well-educated. In this respect, they reflect the way modern Malay royals have themselves become ineluctably “Malay-sian”, with royal palaces bestowing Datukships on the socially ambitious of all races.

At their worst, the “bangsawan” politicians can be deeply conservative, resistant to change and overly cautious. In the case of Najib, his continuing refusal to endorse and promote the reform agenda is undermining his own career.

Still, English language-speaking Malaysians have always tended to feel a close affinity with “bangsawan” leaders. They tend to project onto them the best qualities of their famous fathers — Tun Abdul Razak in Najib's case; and Tun Hussein Onn's in Hishammuddin's — forgetting that each has his own particular weaknesses. Because of this, Malaysians are also the angriest when they feel these “bangsawan” politicians have let them down (as Hishammuddin did with his kris-wielding antics).

As Najib appears to be closing in on the premiership, it's time to review the prospect of a “bangsawan” administration. Back in March, I interviewed the Deputy Prime Minister at his residence in Pekan.

The Razak family compound, with its grove of mature tembusu trees, is at the edge of the town. The original house, the late Razak's home, has been renovated, repainted and air-conditioned. To the right of the house, there are offices as well as a large semi-temporary structure with a concrete floor and a metal roof, and open on four sides. Food was laid out on the tables inside. The compound is an industrial-scale political infrastructure framed by the sluggish waters of the Pahang River flowing behind it.

Pekan is almost exclusively Malay. It is a royal town imbued with the Sultan's brooding presence. Najib with his hereditary title, Orang Kaya Inderapura, is very much “of” the Istana. He was also Menteri Besar of Pahang from 1982-86. These ties reflect Umno's traditional linkages to the royal houses, bonds that are almost alien to opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim with his more activist and populist ways.

Historically, there have been two centres of authority in Malay society: the masjid and the Istana — the first spiritual and the second temporal. There has always been a degree of tension between the two. Umno's links are with the palace. The opposition Pas has a tight grip on the masjid. Despite what Anwar may envisage, this year could in fact presage a historic shift in power to the masjid.

Still, there's no doubt that Najib is one of Malaysia's smartest politicians. He is well-read and has a rigorous mind. His unflappable disposition is well suited to the demands of governance. He presides over meetings effortlessly, can summarise discussions succinctly and understands the importance of prioritising issues. In technocratic terms, he far surpasses both Prime Minister Datuk Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and even Anwar, whose flamboyant style is less suited to the tedium of Cabinet life.

However, Najib's superiority vis-a-vis his peers is less a reflection of his own personal excellence than the sheer weakness of Umno's human resource development. Capable Malay men and women avoid political life like the plague.

Time in Pekan was limited, so I was forced to interview Najib in his stretch Proton on the way to the Kuantan airport. I started by talking about the Indian activist group Hindraf and the devastating impact the temple demolitions in Selangor have had on Indian support for the ruling coalition.

Najib had spoken to an exclusively Indian gathering a few weeks before. To my surprise, he had made a point of apologising for the destruction of the temples.

As we talked, Najib explained: “The level of consciousness for all communities has risen. The nature of Malaysian society is going to be much more complex. We need to meet the rising expectations of Malaysian society — with globalisation and IT.”

I sensed in him a willingness to be all-embracing and open: “As Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, you belong to all communities,” he said. “You have to care for them and listen to their needs and aspirations. At the same time, we have our own constituents. We also need to maintain and deal with them. However, this isn't a zero sum game.”

“We are dominant and we have responsibilities to other races. The other races look up to Umno,” he added. As the conversation returned to Umno, his innate conservatism kicked in.

Najib's much vaunted capabilities will amount to very little as long as he neglects the reform agenda. As it stands, there are too many unanswered questions surrounding the Altantuya murder case.

He must come to terms with the fact that Malaysians look upon him with a jaundiced eye because they don't trust the institutions of state. Were he to push the reform agenda — cleaning up the courts, professionalising the police force and freeing up the media — the doubts about him would begin to fall away.

He must promote greater transparency and accountability, especially now that he is also Finance Minister. His confidence in the face of scrutiny would be the best way to head off the critics and prepare his party for a more people-friendly future. A failure to do so would be fatal both to him and Umno.

Abdullah to hang tough

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Embattled Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has decided to defend his position as president of the ruling Umno despite mounting calls for him to hand over power before party elections in mid-December.

Close associates say Abdullah was convinced by his close supporters during meetings over the weekend that he still enjoyed widespread support in Umno and could easily secure the necessary nominations from the party's delegates to defend the presidency.

“They (his close supporters) have convinced him that he still has the support of the majority,” said a close associate of the Premier, adding that Abdullah could announce his decision before the week's end to see through his plan to hand over power some time in 2010.

Yesterday, Umno divisions in Kelantan and Penang expressed support for the plan to hand over power in 2010. Kelantan Umno chief Datuk Annuar Musa said the state Umno liaison body meeting, which was attended by almost all division chiefs, reached a unanimous decision to support the power transition plan.

Gua Musang Umno head Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who had announced his intention to contest the party's presidency, was absent.

Likewise, in George Town, all 13 Penang Umno divisions and Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings gave their full support to the plan. State Umno liaison committee deputy chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Rashid Abdullah said: “We will nominate Abdullah for the top post. We will defend the position of our president.”

Speaking after a closed-door meeting of the Kelantan Umno liaison committee yesterday, Abdullah said Umno members were supportive of the 2010 plan. “Umno members still care for the party and they want this party to be strong and well,” he said.

This show of support is in contrast to a meeting last Thursday, when several members of Umno's supreme council, the party's main policymaking body, told Abdullah there was a groundswell among the party's rank-and-file for him to quickly hand over the reins to his deputy, Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The requests at the meeting for his early retirement also carried a not-so-subtle warning: if he refused to resign, he risked being humiliated by the party divisions, which would not nominate him to defend the Umno presidency later this year.

Abdullah's gamble to hold on to the Umno presidency, and the premiership that goes with it, is likely to stir unease among the party warlords, who are still reeling from the sharp setbacks in the March general election, which saw an opposition alliance headed by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emerge as a serious threat.

Anwar has declared that his coalition intends to eject the Umno-led Barisan Nasional coalition in coming weeks through the defections of elected representatives from the government.

While many Umno officials doubt that Anwar has the necessary numbers to topple the government, they consider him a serious threat and they believe that Umno needs a strong leader to deal with the opposition.

Abdullah's decision to postpone his departure could also bring into the open a behind-the-scenes campaign by the supporters of Najib.

While Najib has publicly declared he is committed to the 2010 handover plan, his supporters have been canvassing Umno delegates, who will vote at the party assembly in December, to nominate their boss for the presidency in bid to force Abdullah into early retirement.

“The PM believes that Najib is loyal and will remain so. In any case, he now has a chance to prove it by abiding by the handover plan and refusing any nominations for the presidency,” said a close associate of Abdullah.

But Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Umno delegates will have the final say in choosing the party's top leaders. Speaking to reporters after attending a business forum yesterday, he said the transition plan is merely a convention and is not stated in the party's constitution.

He also warned that BN and Umno may not last past 2013 (when the next general election is due) if reforms do not occur quickly.

Some analysts say Abdullah's move to defend his position will force a rethink in the Deputy Premier's camp because an open fight for the leadership will spilt an already fractured Umno and work to the advantage of Anwar.

Others say Abdullah wants to stay in office to repair his tattered record since becoming Umno president and premier in November 2003.

His government has yet to deliver on a pledge to pursue sweeping economic and political reforms. Government debt has risen to its highest level in decades, and the country's fiscal deficit now hovers at 4.8 per cent of gross domestic product.

Abdullah may seek re-election as Umno chief

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Much to the surprise of political pundits here, embattled Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is likely to seek re-election as president of Umno — the position that carries the prime ministership.

Party officials say Abdullah, 67, made the decision at the weekend after huddling with party allies and family members including his son-in-law Khairy Jamaluddin, the deputy chief of Umno's youth wing.

“OK, we won't get that many nominations,” an Abdullah ally told BT. “But I think we should be able to get 70 to 80 with some work.” A challenger for the presidency needs at least 58 nominations from the party's 191 divisions nationwide.

But not all Umno officials think that Abdullah can pull off re-election. At a meeting of Umno state liaison chiefs last Thursday, at least two of his loyalists — Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Ghani Othman and his Pahang counterpart Datuk Adnan Yaakub — told him they can no longer control their divisions, which are likely not to nominate him.

And at an Umno supreme council meeting later, at least four senior members suggested in strong language that Abdullah not seek re-election lest he be humiliated by a lack of nominations.

The meeting ended abruptly after Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said he would settle the leadership transition in talks with Abdullah.

The stakes are huge in a party that operates on a winner-take-all basis. If Abdullah pulls out now, many of his appointees are likely to lose their positions and influence.

The risk of humiliation for Abdullah is real, according to some party officials. Umno divisions begin nominating candidates for the December party polls on Oct 9, and as many as 20 could announce their candidates within a couple of days.

The following week could see another 50 meetings, by which time a trend would be clear. “The estimate is that the Prime Minister may get only about 40 nominations,” said an Umno official. “That is why we do not want him to seek re-election.”

Some officials are so sure Abdullah will not contest that attention within the party has begun shifting to a possible contest for the deputy presidency, now held by Najib.

According to insiders, contenders include International Trade Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Ali Rustam, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Zahid Zamidi and former Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Tan Sri Isa Samad.

Of the four, the favourite could be Muhyiddin, who was one of the first Umno leaders to call for Abdullah's resignation. It is believed that former deputy premier Tun Musa Hitam is leading a behind-the-scenes campaign to get the Najib-Muhyiddin team endorsed unopposed.

Siasat Telur Rebus

Aku berbangsa melayu, jiran aku beah kanan cina, belah kiri india, depan rumah aku cina dan india dan jugak melayu. petang-petang kami main badminton sama-sama.malam kalau masing-masing senang, kami pi minum teh tarik sambil sembang-sembang politik.melayu, cina, india sama-sama duduk semeja.

India depan rumah aku orang kuat MIC Kelang.tak pernah pulak aku nak bertumbuk dengan dia, padahal ideologi politk kami berbeza.cina sebelah rumah aku pulak none partisme.pun tak pernah pulak kami berselisih faham.

Hari sabtu dengan ahad cuti... jam 5 petang kami naik sebijik kereta pegi bazaar ramadhan beli juadah...aku puasa, yang cina dengan india ni tak puasa.tapi depa tak makan, minum atau hisap rokok pun masa lepak dengan aku waktu siang...

Geng-geng PEKIDA ngan Pak Brahim dok dekat negara mana? Zimbabwe ke?

Selamat berjuang untuk geng-geng PEKIDA dan jugak Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia. hangpa gaduh la puas-puas (nak gaduh ngan sape?), hangpa berjuang la sampai menang (sape pulak nak cabar depa nih?). aku nak pi sahur dengan Ah Yi ngan Selvy.

Hangpa bodo..!
