Forum BAR COUNCIL Agenda Abdullah

• Forum sebegitu menimbulkan kemarahan orang Melayu.

For the love of the Jalur Gemilang

I thoroughly agree with Sheih (Kickdefella) that Malaysia is a nation in distress ... However, I decided against flying the flag upside down for my own reasons ... - Tehsin Mukhtar of Me Only Better
Not flying it upside down. On Aug 3, Sheih launched a campaign to fly the Jalur Gemilang upside down as a symbol of the People's Frustration and a signal that the nation is in distress. Several blogs quickly declared their support for this cyber-strike.

But some of them have since changed their minds. They found out that they didn't have the heart to do it.

Pasquale of Barking Magpie is one of them:
"I can sense something that I thought I will never feel again. There are a lot of you morons out there that truly love your country very much. Then by all mean defend it people! .... So here is our beloved Flag!"
On Aug 5, the day I put up my own posting, Engku Emran of Between My Legs, a n old buddy and a new kid on the blog, called me up. He said he was disturbed by the whole upside-down flag business. We met at the Press Club that night to talk about the Jalur Gemilang.

Afterwards, he made a posting here that captures his pain:
"some bloggers have put up our beloved jalur gemilang upside down on their blogs as a sign of cyber-strike...apparently it is also the global code of distress signal...i was and still am terribly disturbed by this recent development...not by their actions (doesn't mean im for it though) but for the very fact that i care for the well being of all...again pls don't get me wrong here as the last thing i want is to mislead any1... I just need to get it off my chest thats all...good nite Malaysia..."
My own posting here drew well over 130 comments; easily more than 90 per cent were strongly against the idea of flying the flag upside-down as a sign of protest.

The overwhelming objection didn't come as a surprise. In early July, when I launched my own cyber-strike not all my blogger bros and sisters were supportive of my action or sympathietic with the reasons for going on the 48-hour strike (which were the same very reasons that compelled Sheih to launch his upside-down flag campaign).

Marina Mahathir and Wong Chun Wai went on strike even before I did as they were fed-up with the way politicians were treating the people and how things were going for the economy. But the two, especially Marina, had even less sympathy from som e fellow bloggers (please read Wattahack's Oh! How Hate Blinds Thee!).

I have decided to fly the Jalur Gemilang, full-stop. I will fly it not upside down nor half-mast, but the way it's supposed to be flown. Like Tehsin and Pasquale and Engku Emran (and Marina, Wong Chun Wai and Wattahack), I agree with Sheih that we are a nation in trouble. I won't go on another strike to prove that point because I believe I've proven my point.

For me, Sheih has proven his point and I hope that on August 31, when our nation celebrates her 51st Merdeka, we'll fly the flag together. Not upside down, not half-mast.

PKR mulls action against protest leader Zulkifli

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat will decide whether disciplinary action would be taken against its Kulim Bandar Baharu MP Zulkifli Noordin for stoking racial and religious sentiments when demonstrating against a forum here.

"We are going to discuss the matter. Zulkifli claims that he is there as a member of Pembela but he is still a party member.

"In principle we support peaceful demonstrations but are against the use of insulting and racial language and the storming of places where people are having discussions," said PKR deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali.

The first-term MP who protested on behalf of Lawyers in Defence of Islam (Pembela) had declared the forum by the Bar Council an insult and a challenge to Muslims in what some have termed a "hate speech" and also forced his way to the front of the auditorium where the forum was being held yesterday.

Syed Husin told The Malaysian Insider that it was hypocritical of Zulkifli to exercise his democratic freedom by denying others of the same freedom.

"I know that he is aware that the party is disagreeable to his actions," he added.

PKR vice-president Sivarasa Rasiah also confirmed that the matter would be discussed when the party's top leadership meets during the week.

"I echo Syed Husin's statement as Zulkifli acted without the sanction of the party and does not reflect our stand on the matter."

Zulkifli could not be contacted for comment.

It was reported that Zulkilfi was quoted yesterday as saying that it was time for the Bar Council to be led by a Muslim, so as to prevent the council from organising forums that could anger Muslims.

The Bar Council, however, has had many Muslim presidents within the last 30 years such as Raja Aziz Addruse, Abdullah A Rahman, Zainur Zakaria, Hendon Mohamed, Khutubul Zaman Bukhari and Sulaiman Abdullah.

Sulaiman is also Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's lead counsel for his defence team against the Sodomy II charge.

PKR de facto leader Anwar had made clear of his position that if the Bar Council forum yesterday were to proceed, it should be held behind closed doors, for now.

"To allay fears of others, have a closed forum. Deal with it, then engage with the rest, particularly those who have expressed concerns," he said on Friday.

Bantahan forum Majlis Peguam, kerajaan disyor pinda akta kahwin

Anwar Akui Hadapi Laluan Sukar Menangi Kerusi Permatang Pauh

Nair's uphill task for human rights

File photo of lawyer Sankara Nair

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 - It's an uphill task. Impossible, even, some say.

Yet, as one of opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's lawyers, Sankara Nair isn't feeling the heat. He says it used to be worse.

Flashback to 1998, when Anwar was convicted of sodomy and spent five years behind bars. Nair was part of Anwar's defence team then.

He told The New Paper in a phone interview yesterday: "I was worried the last time. I lost a lot of my work. I lost some big cases. People won't touch you, they don't want to have anything to do with you. You become a pariah."So why has he stuck around all these years as part of Anwar's legal team? Said Nair, who is single and has spent 13 years in the legal profession: "It's a matter of human rights.

If you believe in something, you just do it. Everything else doesn't matter."Taking on the high-profile Anwar case also accorded him a sort of 'activist lawyer' label. Since then, the 52-year-old former senior police officer has managed to pull in some high-profile cases.

In 2005, he represented the three Chinese women nationals who accused Malaysian police of strip-searching them and slapping them after they were arrested on suspicion for having false documents. That same year,Nair also defended Dr Sadeq Mustafa Faris, a Libyan-American scientist whose research company was investigated in 2005 by the Malaysian government for misusing government funds.

Nair said: "I still had some cases here and there, and that kept me through."

Since 1998, Nair has continued to represent the former deputy prime minister in several legal matters.

These include personal requests for Anwar to visit his seriously ill mother in 2000 when he was in jail, and in 2006 when Anwar filed a civil suit against former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

For the current sodomy case, Anwar's nine-member legal team is headed by veteran lawyer and former Malaysian Bar Council president Haji Sulaiman Abdullah.

As to whether he ever had to fear for his life, Nair appeared blase, saying: "I don't go out much anyway."

But he insisted he is 'politically neutral' and intends to remain so.

"I'm not a member of the PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) or any other opposition party," he said.

So did he feel a sense of deja vu sitting in court on Thursday when sodomy charges were formally laid on Anwar? "Yes, in a way it is. Anwar and I were just saying it yesterday in court," he said.

But he believes there have been slight changes. For example, he expressed surprise that sessions judge S M Komathy Suppiah had not objected to the defence team's request for bail, which was set at RM20,000. "I have faith in the court system. There are good judges there."

Nair also said the police have been trying to be co-operative. He recounted how he had been upset over the 16 Aug arrest when a dozen police cars and about 20 policemen in balaclavas had stopped Anwar's car and hauled him off to jail. "It was a silly thing to do. After that, I wrote to them."

"I said, 'Don't arrest him that way. If you want him in court, I will take him to you'," he said. On Thursday, Nair said the police seemed to respond to his pleas.

"Second time round, it worked out well. I even got an SMS from one of the officers thanking me for co-operating with them," he said.

As for the ground support, Nair said he feels Anwar's supporters are becoming more vocal. "In 1998, people were afraid to speak out. They were worried the police would arrest them.

"Now, you have the Internet. Views are a lot freer. I get people coming up to me telling me they are not scared like before. They are willing to speak out."

Yet, some things, Nair added, "haven't changed at all".

"This case is full of holes. For example, the police report wasn't even given to me. I asked for it in court and they said no. 'So after court yesterday, I went back and wrote them a letter and still they said no," he said.

"I wrote them an appeal letter and finally, they said yes. Then this morning, they say I cannot get it. There are just so many inconsistencies," Nair added.

'Janji telah diketepi'

Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad

Leader of all Malaysians? Yeah. Right!

File photo of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi

AUG 10 - The leader of all Malaysians. Once it captured the spirit of optimism that accompanied Abdullah Ahmad Badawi into office as the country's fifth prime minister.

Today, it is a reminder of what should have been; what could have been; another unfilled promise by a politician who promised to blur the racial and religious lines but ended up delivering an even more polarized nation five years on. The leader of all Malaysians.

Once it offered the umbrella of comfort for non-Muslims, planting hope among the 45 per cent of the country's population that the difficult issues of conversion, places of worship and freedom of religion would be tackled.Today, these five words have been buried by a community feeling increasingly despondent about their place here and the ability of important institutions to protect the rights of all Malaysians.

The numbers tell the story. A comprehensive survey on political developments since Election 2008 show that only 18 per cent of the 3,000 people polled identified Abdullah as the leader of all Malaysians, with only 7.3 per cent Chinese believing that he had done enough to deserve the moniker. Generally, more Indians and Chinese feel that he protects the interests of Malays more than he looks after the other races.

Even the anecdotal evidence suggests that the despair is coursing through the veins of many non-Muslims. Datuk A. Vaithalingam has always been a straight-talker. He never fudged or hedged when he was a top official in the golden era of the Malaysian sports scene, the days when the country's football team was a source of national pride and Isthiaq Mubarak was clearing hurdles at the Olympics.

But he outdid himself last Wednesday. Speaking as the president of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism, he gave a candid appraisal of the non-Muslim sentiment in the country to Abdullah.

"I must report to you that many non-Muslims feel marginalised in today's Malaysia. There is growing discomfort with the rapid Islamisation of our society. Universal values of ethical conduct and good governance, values which are shared by all religions, are appropriated by some to be only "Islamic", '' he said at the 25th anniversary of the council.

He cautioned the Prime Minister - the guest-of-honour - that unless concrete steps were taken to assure 45 per cent of Malaysia's population of fair treatment, the outflow of talent from the country would continue unabated.

Abdullah thanked him for his honesty and made the usual sounds on the need to be fair to all races. But even the PM knows that his government has not come close to delivering on any promises to non-Muslims since he came to power in October 2003.

Questions of body snatching or the status of burial rights for non-Muslims whose conversion to Islam was unknown to the dead person's family remain unresolved.

Abdullah promised to put in place a mechanism after the nastiness surrounding the burial of Everest hero Moorthy in 2006.

Little has changed since then. Similarly, there has been some disquiet over the plight of mothers whose husbands convert to Islam and then, avoid their commitments under the civil law to their former family. Non Muslims are unhappy that the courts are allowing one parent to convert children to Islam even if the other parent does not consent.

Vaithilingam also noted: "In schools, our children are not permitted to and do not get education in their own religion. Moral lessons are reportedly vetted by the Islamic authorities.''

His litany of complaints on Wednesday was long.

This is not the first time that the council has voiced their displeasure at the state of neglect over the interests of non-Muslims. Deep down, they know that Abdullah is not prepared to champion these issues, not when his own position in the country is precarious.

But they cannot keep the lid on the percolating discontent among the non-Muslims. That is why many of the religious groups backed the move by the Bar Council to proceed with its controversial public forum on conversion to Islam on Saturday.

The forum was eventually stopped by the organizers on the advice of police and threats by Muslim non-governmental groups.

Truth to be told, little good would have emerged from a forum not represented by major Muslim players such as Parti Islam SeMalaysia, Umno and Jakim. But in the absence of any meaningful moves by the government or political parties to resolve issues related to conversion, non-Muslims are prone to support any group willing to discussing these matters.

Abdullah and other Umno leaders have urged the Bar Council and other bodies to discuss sensitive matters behind closed doors but the Prime Minister will know from recent experience that this approach does not guarantee any progress. For example, he knows that many of his Umno colleagues in Cabinet are either against or ambivalent about promoting dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims. That is why Datuk Shafie Apdal's proposal to have more dialogue on national unity was shot down vigorously by an Umno minister during a recent Cabinet meeting.

A cabinet minister, who declined to be identified, told the Malaysian Insider: "Shafie did not get much support.

Pak Lah did not say much and neither did Najib. It could because this is the Umno election season and nobody wants to do anything which will upset party members. But it could also be in-built mechanism against dealing with any difficult issue, whether judicial reform or other reforms.''

There is little doubt that the party grassroots is ambivalent about reform - and this is a charitable interpretation.

During recent branch meetings, Umno members were focused on Malay unity - specifically the need to stay as one and fight off demands from the increasingly vocal non-Malay population.

There was little discussion on the need to shed the party's perceived arrogance and refill the depleting bank of non-Malay support.

Against this backdrop and with the upcoming party elections in December, no national leader is going to champion the cause of non-Muslims and risk alienating the Muslim constituency.

Certainly not the man who once said that he was the leader of all Malaysians. That claim rings hollow among many non-Muslims today.

Dr M will migrate if Anwar becomes PM

KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 10 - Saying he did not want anyone like Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim "who stabbed him in the back" as Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad said yesterday he would rather migrate if the former deputy prime minister succeeds in toppling the Barisan Nasional government.

"If he comes Prime Minister, I will get out of the country. Give everything to him," Utusan Malaysia quoted the former prime minister's reply to a question at the Current Challenges for Malays forum here.

However, the acerbic Dr Mahathir was confident that Anwar will not become Prime Minister by September 16 although he was sure his former protégé would be victorious in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election this Aug 26.

He said Anwar was greedy enough for support that he would forsake the special privileges for his own race to cooperate with the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) which is filled with racism.

Muted response from the non-Muslim groups

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 - To some people, it was a symbol of Muslim unity when leaders, members and supporters of three ideologically conflicting parties - Pas, Parti Keadilan Rakyat and Umno - managed to shut down a legal forum on conversion to Islam.

The protesters, putting words of their leaders into action, stormed into the Bar Council auditorium in Kuala Lumpur yesterday to put an end to the planned half-day open forum only an hour after it started.

Till late last night, there was neither a comment nor criticism from the Barisan Nasional component parties such as MCA, Gerakan, MIC and its multiracial Sabah and Sarawak affiliates. Even the non-Malay leaders of PKR have yet to offer any views.

The only consistent voice of opposition is DAP supreme Lim Kit Siang. But even he is muted when it comes to naming names. Lim chose to blame the police as the culprit.

"The police yielding to pressure to disrupt the half-day Bar Council forum on conversion to Islam at 10 am in Kuala Lumpur today is a most adverse reflection on law and order as well as religious harmony in Malaysia on the eve of the 51st Merdeka anniversary.

"Malaysia has failed a major test in nation-building to demonstrate that we are shaping up to be a more civil society where sensitive issues of inter-faith problems can be discussed in a mature and responsible manner to promote national unity and religious harmony in the country," he said in a well-guarded words statement.

Lim said the police failed in its duty when they sided with the protestors in ensuring the abrupt end of the half-day forum at 10am instead of upholding the law.

"Are there any Cabinet Ministers who are prepared to raise this episode at Wednesday's Cabinet meeting to uphold the right to have such forums to be held?

"This is unlikely considering the public stand that has been taken by Umno leaders including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein demanding that the Bar Council forum should be called off."

Lim however omitted the names of Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and a few other Pas leaders who had already deemed that the forum was meant to insult Islam and would create tension, and therefore must be stopped. Pas Youth leader Salahuddin Ayub also joined yesterday's protest.

It takes the DAP younger member such as Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua to put in plain words of what he thinks of the whole situation.

Stating that the Bar Council is the most appropriate organisation to lead discussions on the Constitution and the laws of Malaysia was the Bar Council, he said it would make a complete mockery of our legal and judicial system if its very practitioners were denied opportunities to discuss or explain the laws.

He was also disappointed with the protest led by PKR's Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP Zulkifli Noordin, saying that the protest was not only misguided but also immature and unconstructive.

"If discussing our constitution and our laws is equivalent to "Islam-bashing", then he (Zulkifli) needs to have his head inspected. The forum did not create the "hoo-haa". It is "leaders" like him who fail to understand simple principles who mislead others into thinking that the whole world is against them.

"Well, it appears that this type of thuggish and loutish behaviour is unfortunately not only limited to Umno Youth," he added.

Despite the deafening silence among the non-Malay parties, particularly the MCA, Gerakan and MIC despite having been demanding for more freedom and tolerant among the people, a lone MIC voice was heard yesterday.

MIC Youth coordinator T. Mohan in a statement posted on the internet said the movement strongly condemned the tactics of irresponsible groups in disrupting the forum.

He also expressed concerns that statements made by certain leaders who had opposed the forum had caused resentment among the non-Muslims.

He said they should have come out with their proposals in addressing the issue of non-Muslim husbands who abandon their spouses and their families to convert to Islam, rather than to stop a legitimate forum.

"The MIC Youth also calls on the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) to publicly state their stand as the group who opposed the forum was led by a PKR MP. Is this what Hindraf gets for supporting PKR in the general election?"

SAPP should not be punished

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 10 - As the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) cools its heels waiting for Barisan Nasional to decide its membership, another Sabah leader, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok said it was not necessary for the coalition to take action against the rebel party for its no-confidence stand on the Prime Minister.

The United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) president, a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said no action had been taken against certain key leaders from Umno who also made a similar stand, with several even calling on the premier to step down.

Upko has four MPs: Dompok , Datuk Wilfred Bumburing who is also Tuaran MP, Datuk Dr Marcus Majigoh (Putatan MP) and Datuk Siringan Gubat (Ranau MP).

The Barisan supreme council last Wednesday put on ice any action against SAPP, whose president Datuk Yong Teck Lee announced on June 18 that the party's two MPs would support any parliamentary motion of no confidence against Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Barisan had issued SAPP with a show cause letter for the statement and SAPP stood firm with its stand in their reply submitted on July 30. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Najib Tun Razak said SAPP's reply must be studied in detail.

Speaking to reporters after opening a workshop on "Impact of Laws and Government Policies on Indigenous People in Sabah" on Friday, Dompok said Upko and SAPP had stood up for the rights of the Sabah people.

"SAPP, as one of the Barisan component parties in Sabah, has delivered its views about Sabah issues and we also have similar views on the problems faced by the people in the state," The Star quoted Dompok as saying.

He said that Upko and SAPP would continue to defend the rights of the state and its people.

Other Sabah-based political parties like Parti Bersatu Sabah led by Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan and Liberal Democratic Party led by Datuk V.K. Liew have been critical of SAPP's no-confidence stand.

Jangan suke2 maki orang!!

Ada seorang pompuan , masa tu dia sedang berhenti ditepi jalan sambil
melihat keadaan keretanya yang kemek. Hari dah nak masuk maghrib, dia menjadi semakin resah. Dah lah jalan tu sempit, lampu jalan tak de pulak.

Tiba-tiba datang sebuah motosikal datang dari arah bertentangan. Dah lah tak pasang lampu, tak pakai topi keledar.. laju pulak tu.. macam pelesit. Perempuan tu apa lagi, dia terus menjerit " Hoi.. Babiiiiiiiii. ........
Slow sikit....."

Bila mendengar laungan perempuan tu, apa lagi, penunggang motosikal tu pun menjerit balas .. "Celaka!!!!! F**k you!!!, Sial kau!!!"... "Bagerooo..." Sedap jer cakap babi...."

tadi.

( Moral of the Story : Hoi babi!!!!!!!! slow skit!!!! tu bukanya marah...

Anjing lambang orang-orang soleh?

Makan setelah lapar, berhenti sebelum kenyang

Have we reached the end of the road for oil?

LONDON, Aug 10 — With the oil price apparently in full retreat, it is tempting to breathe a sigh of relief. After soaring to an all-time high of more than US$147 (RM485.00) a barrel in mid-July, the cost of crude has dropped by nearly US$30 in the last four weeks.

Although the price is still more than 10 times higher than a decade ago, some analysts are now talking of a "tipping point'', predicting a continued slide to US$90 a barrel. So why has a commodity that until recently seemed like a one-way bet suddenly gone into reverse? And having helped push the economy to the brink of recession is the oil shock over, or merely in remission?

One thing is almost universally agreed upon: the recent slump is not due to the bursting of a speculative bubble. Opec, the 13-member cartel that produces 40 per cent of the world's oil, has long claimed that the steep rise in price was not justified by "fundamentals'', blaming it squarely on speculators.

But few others believed that. Yes, hedge funds have poured billions of dollars into oil futures contracts, but a recent report by the International Energy Agency concluded that this was largely a result of the price rise, rather than a cause.

Instead, the driving factors are to be found not in the financial markets, but in the real world. It is endlessly reported that the demand for oil in Asian countries has soared since the turn of the century, and that China's thirst has been especially prodigious.

What is less realised is that global oil production has been essentially stagnant, at around 86 million barrels a day, since early 2005.

Despite soaring demand, production outside of Opec has been persistently disappointing, as international oil companies struggle to maintain production from ageing fields. Opec itself has been unwilling - or unable - to raise its output.

So, for the last three years, global oil supply has been a zero-sum game. With supply fixed, and the East consuming ever more, the price had to rise high enough to force the West to consume less.

And that is exactly what happened: overall oil consumption in developed countries has fallen for two years in a row.

The price rise was further fuelled by the fact that consumers in many Asian countries are protected by hefty subsidies. China is estimated to have spent US$40 billion on fuel subsidies in the last year, and Indonesia US$20 billion, so their people could afford to consume more fuel even as the oil price rocketed.

The same is true in Opec countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Venezuela, where subsidies keep fuel costs at mere pennies a litre.

But two things have now changed. Saudi Arabia, the only country in Opec with spare production capacity, has finally yielded to international pleas and raised its output, announcing increases of 300,000 barrels per day in June, and a further 200,000 in July.

At the same time, the industrialised world is no longer simply economising on oil, but plunging into outright recession as a result of the credit crunch and the oil price spike - signalling further future cuts in demand.

In the US, the world's biggest oil consumer, motorists are driving fewer miles and deserting gas-guzzling SUVs in droves, leading to a collapse in sales at car-makers such as Ford - which recently announced stunning losses of US$9 billion for the three months to the end of June. In May this year, US demand for fuel dropped to 19.7 million barrels a day - almost a million barrels less than last year.

In Britain, where the price of unleaded has jumped from around 85p a litre 18 months ago to 112p now, drivers are also cutting back.

Yesterday, it was reported that dealers were refusing to accept petrol-thirsty 4x4s in the second-hand market: they cost so much to refuel that they are worth more as scrap.

A recent survey by National Express showed that more than 60 per cent of motorists had cut their annual mileage and were considering greater use of public transport. In Spain, the government has announced a plan to cut oil imports by 10 per cent a year and impose a 50mph speed limit on dual carriageways.

In Asia, too, there are signs of a slowdown. A survey released last week showed that in July, China's manufacturing sector contracted for the first time since 2005.

"China's economic growth has shown a drastic deterioration lately, which is much faster and worse than many people's expectations,'' said Lan Xue, an analyst at Citibank Asia. South Korean oil consumption has been falling for eight months, while Japanese imports have recently fallen for the first time in nine months.

As these countries' budgets come under increasing strain, many are reducing subsidies on fuel - which in turn magnifies the effect of the downturn. In China, the authorities have raised fuel prices by 18 per cent, in Indonesia by almost 30 per cent, and Malaysia by more than 40 per cent.

This ought to reduce future demand, although some analysts warn that in a country like China, where motorists often have to queue for several hours to fill up anyway, it may not make much difference.

Although the oil price may have peaked for now, the impacts of its meteoric rise will continue to be felt. In Britain, prices at the pump should start to fall by the end of the summer, according to the Petrol Retailers Association.

But the impact on energy bills is likely to persist: when British Gas recently raised gas prices by 35 per cent and electricity by 9 per cent, hoisting the average annual bill of its 16 million customers to over £1,300 (a £400 increase), it was a direct consequence of the oil price.

With North Sea gas production in steep decline, Britain is increasingly dependent on imports from Europe, where the price of gas is contractually linked to oil. Since about 40 per cent of Britain's electricity is generated from gas, power prices are also indirectly determined by the price of crude.

As a result, one of the Government's most cherished targets - to abolish fuel poverty among vulnerable households by 2010 - looks unlikely to be achieved.

Instead, campaigners say the number of fuel-poor households - those forced to spend more than 10 per cent of their income on energy bills - will soar to six million by Christmas.

Rising energy prices are not only driving the economy into recession, but also fuelling inflation, which is running at 3.8 per cent, almost double the Bank of England's target.

This creates a major dilemma for policymakers: whether to raise interest rates to curb rising prices, or cut them to stave off the economic downturn. If they get it wrong, there is a danger of both problems becoming entrenched - a return to the stagflation of the Seventies, but even worse.

Amid such gloom, it may be surprising that most analysts continue to predict high oil prices. Barclays Capital forecasts a range of US$115-US$140 a barrel, while Goldman Sachs and CIBC predict US$200 in the next few years. Although the outlook for oil demand might be poor, the prospects for supply could be worse.

"The uncertainty on the supply side is even more than the possibility of softening demand,'' said Shokri Ghanem, head of Libya's Opec delegation.

This is not simply because of political events, such as this week's Kurdish attack on the million-barrel-a-day Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline in Turkey, but because of geological constraints.

Contrary to the sanguine view put forward by Martin Vander Weyer in these pages yesterday, the facts are stark: the world has been discovering less for the last 40 years; for every barrel we discover we consume three; output is in terminal decline in 60 of the 98 oil-producing countries; and hundreds of billions of dollars in investment since the turn of the century have failed to stem declining production at many of the world's biggest oil companies.

As a result, it is widely agreed that oil production in the non-Opec world will "peak'' - reach its maximum possible level - within two years, if it has not already done so. This means that the huge profits being made by multi-nationals such as Shell or ExxonMobil may turn out to be their last hurrah.

"The days of the international oil companies are coming to a glorious end,'' said Fatih Birol, chief economist of the International Energy Agency, last month.

"Their reserves are declining and they will have difficulty accessing new ones.''

Unfortunately, this means that the global oil supply will soon depend on Opec as never before. Many analysts suspect that the Opec countries, which claim to hold three quarters of known reserves, have been exaggerating their size for decades - in other words, they too will soon reach the physical limits of production.

But even if they can raise output, they may have little incentive do so. Creating additional production capacity would cost them billions, for which their reward would presumably be a lower oil price. That might not seem a bargain to them. On the other hand, if they do nothing, the oil price will recover upon any return to economic growth.

Our future seems to hold an unpalatable Hobson's choice: recession or a soaring oil price. Which would you prefer?

Anwar turns 61 on the campaign trail

Anwar is contesting the seat vacated by his wife Dr Wan Azizah. — Picture by Choo Choy May.
CHEROK TOK KUN, Aug 10 — Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim turned 61 today on the campaign trail in his political hometown Cherok Tok Kun, part of his old parliamentary seat Permatang Pauh, where he will start contesting in a by-election in six days.

The by-election is another chapter in his tumultuous career that saw him rise to within a heartbeat of being prime minister, only to be sacked, beaten and jailed, and then return triumphantly to lead Malaysia's resurgent opposition.

He launched his election campaign last night in nearby Seberang Jaya with his Ceramah Perdana Menuju Putrajaya, an allusion to his bid to win the Permatang Pauh seat and then make his way to Putrajaya and be prime minister by his self-imposed deadline of Sept 16 or Malaysia Day.

Despite being charged with another count of sodomy, the same charge he was convicted of 10 years ago before being acquitted, Anwar is confident he can seize power after the historic March elections that denied the Barisan Nasional its customary two-thirds parliamentary majority and a further loss of four states.

This morning, he performed prayers at the nearby Masjid An-Nadhoh seeking blessings for a victory that no one doubts on polling day on Aug 26. Politicians from both sides of the divide agree Anwar will win but wonder about the majority. His former mentor-turned-nemesis Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad agreed as much.

"At the moment, I don't see any (candidates), certainly from the BN. Anwar is going to win. What will be interesting is the margin. Whether it is bigger or less than what he obtained previously," Dr Mahathir told Bernama in Kuala Terengganu yesterday.

But the charismatic former deputy prime minister is looking beyond Permatang Pauh and said he has enough lawmakers from the BN to form the government. That will only happen after he returns to Parliament on Aug 27, he claimed.

He will have two weeks to stitch the deal notwithstanding his next court appearance for his sodomy trial on Sept 10. Anwar has denied the charges and accused the government of being behind the allegations made by Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 23, a former male aide whom he claims is just a mere volunteer and a coffee boy

As Malaysians look on to see him make good his boast of finally becoming prime minister, they will also brace themselves for a re-run of the lurid trial a decade ago that sent him to jail for six years on sodomy and corruption charges.

He was at his peak then, rising to prominence as a radical Islamic student leader who was embraced by Dr Mahathir, the strongman of Malaysian politics who ruled for more than two decades until 2003.

Politics is a family affair for Anwar and Dr Wan Azizah.
He enjoyed a meteoric rise in Umno, which leads the multi-racial coalition that has dominated Malaysian politics since independence from Britain half a century ago.

After joining the party in 1982, he was elected chief of its influential Youth wing two years later and then ascended to the post of deputy president, second only to his mentor Dr Mahathir.

He served in various portfolios, including sports, agriculture and education, before in 1991 becoming a celebrated finance minister and then deputy premier two years later.

Anwar was acknowledged as heir apparent to the ageing Dr Mahathir, but in 1998 as Asian economies were toppling amid the regional financial crisis, a power struggle bubbled over.

Dr Mahathir had become infuriated by Anwar's calls for reform, and an end to corruption and nepotism that had become entrenched in Malaysia during his long rule.

In quick succession, Anwar was sacked, hit with the sodomy and corruption charges, and brought into court with a black eye after a beating from the police chief.

The stunning fall from grace, widely seen both in Malaysia and abroad as politically motivated, triggered massive protests in scenes never witnessed in a country where a tight lid is kept on dissent.

Anwar was sent to jail and finally released in 2004 when the sodomy charge was overturned by the nation's highest court. He emerged in poor health, spending several years recuperating and working as an academic.

By 2007, however, he was making skirmishes on to the political scene, campaigning for the Parti Keadilan Rakyat formally headed by his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail, who was thrust into the political limelight when he went to jail.

In March this year, against all predictions except his own, Anwar led a three-party opposition alliance to astonishing victories in the general election, seizing five states and a third of parliamentary seats.

The unprecedented results, and his boasts shortly after that he was poised to seize power, shook the ruling elite to the core. Several of the coalition parties were obliterated and Umno faced calls for sweeping reforms.

Politics is a family affair for Anwar. His wife Dr Wan Azizah, a petite, Irish-trained doctor, has been in Parliament since 1999, in the Permatang Pauh electorate in Anwar's home state of Penang.

They have six children, five of them girls, and their 27-year-old daughter Nurul Izzah was elected to Parliament in the landmark March elections. — Agencies

Why Samy withdraw RM14.40million?

The story maybe Old but the man behind it still controlling Malaysian Indians live hood by rearing touts and gangsters. Maika, which was launched with much hype and hope as an economic vehicle and a miracle to lift the poor Indian from the shackles of poverty is the best classical example of this untouchable man’s achievement.

The urge in very Indian to uplift their community Late Tan Sri V Manickavasagam mooted the idea of forming Maika Holdings which taken up by SamyVelu. Trusting SamyVelu poor Indians mortgaged all their life time savings to subscribe Maika Shares. The company that by 1984 raised RM106 million from almost 66,400 shareholders with Dato’ Seri S Samy Vellu ,MIC president as largest individual shareholder with almost 2.8 million shares.

The amount invested in Maika was even larger than that obtained by the MCA’s Multi-Purpose Holdings when the company commenced business. Multi-Purpose Holdings Berhad is listed in Bursa Malaysia with turnover of RM 3.2 billion recorded in November 2007. Any news from Maika on their 2007 performance?

What happen to Maika ? Why Samy appoint his Son as the Chairman? Why thugs present at every Maika’s AGM ? Why Samy answering questions not the Board of Directors or Management? And much more ?

Let’s start to find some possible answers by asking :

“Hati kecil saya mula mempersoalkan siapakah dia si Tulang Besi.

Dan Polis Pencen dipersilakan membaca artikel saya yang terbaru: “How Could BAR Council Be So Stupid??

Ertinya mereka jahil tapi mereka rasa mereka pandai). “

Ingin saya ingtkan Polis Pencen, saya generasi kedua PAS.

Bahagian #3: Polis Pencen menuduh saya memfitnah Datuk Harun Din

Bahagian #4:Polis Pencen berkata:

(Rujuk “PAS mengakui bertemu Perdana Menteri)

Bahagian #5: Polis Pencen berkata:
