Mereka turut merampas laptopnya.

Another round of ISA for Anwar?

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has left observers wondering if Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim could once again be detained under the Internal Security Act.

During a press conference at Putrajaya this afternoon to announce a reshuffle of cabinet portfolios, the premier made remarks that appear to indicate the possibility of an ISA arrest for the maverick politician.

Among others, Abdullah described the opposition leader as a "threat to the country's economy as well as a possible threat to (national) security."

abdullah ahmad badawi pm pc 160908 02This in itself provides sufficient grounds for the authorities to invoke the security law which provides detention without trial against Anwar.

And when asked what action the government would take against him, Abdullah refused to reveal his cards, saying: "I will not indicate what plan I have."

Employing the ISA against Anwar would undoubtedly have severe repercussions but such a move would not come as a surprise since the opposition leader had been constantly flirting with this possibility.

Takeover Bid

Since the March 8 general election, Anwar had been a major thorn on the side of Barisan Nasional by threatening to launch a political coup.

pakatan rakyat 916 gathering kelana jaya 150908 anwar.jpgThe two-time ISA veteran claimed that he has enough ruling MPs willing to cross over into the opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat in order for him to form government with a simple majority.

Anwar had failed to initiate the coup yesterday (Sept 16) - the date which he had set - but reiterated that he had the numbers and the toppling of the BN-led government was imminent.

The 61-year-old politician had also requested to meet Abdullah to discuss a transition of power plan and urged the premier not to resort to drastic measures, like declaring an emergency, to thwart the takeover.

Abdullah, however, rejected the meeting and dismissed the takeover claims as lies.

Anwar, who is currently facing a court battle over a sodomy charge, was first arrested under the ISA in 1974 in connection with a student protest. The former student leader was incarcerated for 20 months.

More than two decades later, he was once again briefly arrested under the ISA after spearheading a series of protests against his sacking as deputy premier in 1998.

Najib takes over as finance minister

BREAKING NEWS! updated 3.15pm Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today said he would pass his finance portfolio to his deputy Najib Abdul Razak, while he takes over as defence minister.

Abdullah told a press conference this afternoon that the swap in the cabinet posts will take effect immediately.

The prime minister, who has held the post of finance minister since 2004, said he had informed the cabinet of the decision.

umno ahmad ismail mt meet 100908 abdullah najib pcAbdullah also said that he may step down earlier than 2010 depending on Najib's performance.

However, both leaders nevertheless reaffirmed their commitment to the 2010 power transition plan.

Abdullah added that both he and Najib will defend their respective posts as Umno's top two leaders in the party polls in December.

Najib, who was present at the hastily-called press conference, said when asked to comment: "We have agreed. I'm leaving it to the party. We are offering ourselves to the party and I hope that they will accept."

There has been increasing pressure on Abdullah to quit earlier than scheduled, but it now appears that Najib has stitched a deal with his boss to placate the demands of the Umno grassroots.

Both men have been at the centre of a political maelstorm, caught by bitter infighting in Umno amid a mounting challenge from Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, who has promised to form a new government soon.

Anwar A "Threat To Nation's Economy'

Last week, Najib backed away from a power transition pact made with Abdullah in July, whereby his 68-year-old boss would hand over to him the premiership and Umno presidency in June 2010.

mahathir and umno 190508 02Observers say the latest move by Abdullah was to assure Najib that his accession to the top post in the country was not affected, and also to deflect a campaign led by ex-premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad (left) to unseat him from the Umno presidency.

Abdullah also touched on Anwar's request for a meeting to discuss a power transfer to the opposition Pakatan Rakyat, based on the claim that the latter has at least 31 defectors from Barisan Nasional to form a new government.

He said the letter which was sent by Pakatan leaders did not mention anything about a power transfer.

The prime minister also described Anwar as a "threat to the country's economy as well as possible threat to security".

"I will not indicate what plan I have," he said when asked if he would act against Anwar.

Najib has also been appointed deputy chairperson of government investment arm Khazanah Holdings.

Market Soft

Meanwhile, shares sank a third day today - charting a new low for the year - amid gloom in global banking stocks and growing fears that the political standoff between Abdullah and Anwar might be prolonged.

“The worst case scenario is the uncertainty dragging. Even if the global backdrop clears but the domestic uncertainty plays out further, there will certainly be room for further downside,” said Vishnu Varathan, analyst at Forecast Singapore Pte Ltd.

Political bickering has marred the Malaysian bourse this year, with investors staying on the sidelines in anticipation of a sea change in the local scene after Pakatan scored a major victory in the March general election.

At the midday break, the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index was at 1,007.14, down 5.23 points. It hit a fresh year-low of 1,002.83 in morning trade.

Dealers expect more losses in the days ahead, with the benchmark index forecast to breach the pyschological 1,000 points, while support is seen at the 900 points mark.

Welcome General Pak Lah..!

MCA, Gerakan told to work with Umno to kick PM out

It is time for Umno, MCA and Gerakan to join forces to unseat Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, said his predecessor Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

mahathir pc 260608 05"Then and then only would we be able to revive BN and perhaps restructure it. If not, race relations will go from bad to worse and the whole country will suffer," he added.

Mahathir said Umno, MCA and Gerakan leaders should also try to heal the rift and help revive the ailing ruling coalition.

"However, I must admit that this will be quite impossible if Abdullah still leads BN and the government," he added in his latest blog posting.

Mahathir also lamented that race relations in Malaysia has now become worse despite some claiming otherwise.

"I may be wrong and certainly the leader of the government will say I am wrong, but what I see today is more extreme racialism raising its ugly head," he said citing the latest controversy involving Umno chieftain Ahmad Ismail.

umno mt meeting on ahmad ismail 100908 ahmad ismail.jpg"The furore caused by him, a minor figure in Umno, is out of proportion to the issue itself. But because of poor handling by the Umno big guns it became an issue that can split BN itself. Now we have MCA and Gerakan threatening to leave BN."

Mahathir said he could appreciate the need for the Chinese-based parties to regain the support of the Chinese community by showing their strong stand against Umno.

But the only result of this would be the antagonism of the Malays against the Chinese, he warned.

"If this goes on, if the Gerakan and MCA leaves BN because of what Ahmad Ismail said, then who gains? Obviously the opposition Pakatan Rakyat would gain.

"The choice for Gerakan and MCA is either to join the opposition or to degenerate into insignificant parties which can never aspire to win enough seats to form a government. The end result will be victory for the opposition."

'Remove The Captain'

As for the opposition, Mahathir wondered aloud if parties like PAS, an entirely Malay party with its Islamic state vision and DAP with its predominantly Chinese base and secular politics could form a good government?

"The Pakatan is not a properly constructed coalition like BN. It is just a collection of disparate parties which come together in order to win elections by not contesting against each other."

anwar ibrahim enters parliament building as mp 280808"I know PAS and DAP are not happy with Johnny-come-lately PKR and Anwar Ibrahim. They don't want to be subservient to PKR or have Anwar as their prime minister. They don't want PKR playing the role of Umno in Pakatan."

"The result will be chaos for this country. There would be racial tension which may turn ugly."

On the BN front, the former premier said the disenchanted Chinese component parties are unwilling to openly name the culprit behind their woes but like the Malays, would condemn the leadership of Abdullah in private.

"But no one would openly say so. Instead as we can see Umno is made the scapegoat but this will not improve race relations or improve the quality of the BN government.

abdullah ahmad badawi pm pc 160908 01"Unless and until Abdullah is removed nothing that the Chinese parties and Umno can do will help improve race relations or resuscitate BN or improve the government of the country."

Mahathir said instead of Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak apologising over the Ahmad Ismail debacle, Umno should have disciplined him.

The deputy premier's apology and its rejection by Gerakan simply angered the Malays. At the same time I don't think support for Gerakan and MCA would increase, he added.

Mahathir said the BN leader should have called the parties concerned and persuade them not to use the race card but the leader was too scared to face Ahmad Ismail one-to-one.

"Instead he resorted to the Internal Security Act to prove that he is impartial. Now not only the Malays but the Chinese too will become more angry."

"In my last article I tried to reduce the anti-BN feeling. To me it is still a great coalition, still the best institution in the multi-racial Malaysian politics."

"The problem is incompetent leadership. You don't sink the ship because the captain is not handling it properly. You remove the captain."

Angkatan Belia Islam M’sia (ABIM) condemns use of ISA!

Press Statement :

ABIM Condemns The Use Of Internal Security Act

The Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) strongly affirms that Malaysia is a country of laws not of men. We are a country which respects the rule of law and its equal application to all citizens under our Constitution and our guiding Islamic principles. At no time should a person be detained without undergoing due process of law, in which the right to fair hearing is of utmost importance, and criminal prosecution initiated for unreasonable purposes. Such an action, regardless of the initiating party, goes against the principles of natural justice and the Syari’ah which mandates impartiality, justice and fairness.

We strongly condemn the detentions of blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok under the draconian law of the Internal Security Act (ISA). ISA is a draconian instrument that goes against all tenets of fairness, justice and demoting the rule of law. It promotes cruelty and injustice by denying its detainees the right to be heard and a fair trial. In addition, the ISA is also prone to political abuse and there have been instances where the detainees have been mistreated.

With regard to the detentions of the two under ISA, whatever the motives of the detaining authority and the reasons for the detention, it is incumbent upon us to demand conformity with these standards. Both of the detainees should be given immediate access to legal counsel and, if there is a strong criminal case against them, they should be immediately produced before the court to face criminal charges and to be allowed a fair hearing.

In like fashion, we call upon the media, both the conventional and the new media, to give like effect to the grounded principles of fairness as established by our faith. In this respect, the media is responsible to carry out fair reporting of the incidents by taking into consideration sensitivities of our multiracial and multi-religious society. To do less, either as a participant in the process or an observer, is to forsake the bedrock principles of our Faith.

Even though ABIM is against the use of the ISA, at the same time ABIM believes that no individuals should be allowed unlimited freedom to ridicule, disparage and scandalize issues especially those relating to religion and race that may result in a breakdown of social order. The right to criticize and comment must be exercised responsibly within the limits of propriety that is sensible within social realities of our country.

Tambah beliau, proses siasatan perlu melalui beberapa peringkat sebelum Majlis Pimpinan Tertinggi PKR memutuskan sebarang tindakan.

SAPP to make crucial decision on Wednesday

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Progressive Party is expected to make a crucial decision Wednesday afternoon on its position in Barisan Nasional two months after declaring no confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

All indications are that the party chief Datuk Yong Teck Lee will steer his 36-member supreme council meeting beginning at 2pm to decide on pulling out of the coalition which the party joined in 1994.

If SAPP pulls out to throw its support behind Pakatan Rakyat, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Raymond Tan, the Tanjong Papat assemblyman and Elopura assemblyman Au Kam Wah are expected to resign.

Tan, the state Infrastructure Development Minister, is one of the three SAPP deputy presidents while Au, the Sabah Energy Corporation chairman, is the party Youth Chief.

Both Tan and Au are expected to attend the meeting which the party secretary general Datuk Richard Yong said Wednesday morning was to discuss party matters.

On whether the meeting will decide to pull out from Barisan, Richard said: “Our position within Barisan is always discussed at our meetings.”

While a decision on the pull out appears to be on the cards, several party members cautioned that the meeting might end up with only deciding on sending a letter to Barisan headquarters asking to make a stand on its position as SAPP had not been invited for six recent Barisan meetings in Kuala Lumpur.

Richard said that one or two supreme councillors have written in stating they were unable to attend Wednesday’s meeting. He said that SAPP’s two MPs - Datuk Eric Enchin Majimbun and Datuk Dr Chua Soon Bui - have indicated they will be at the meeting.

SAPP has two MPs and four assemblymen in the coalition. The other two SAPP assemblymen are assistant state Finance Minister Melanie Chia (Luyang) and Datuk Liew Teck Chan (Likas).

Tiada anggota Parlimen di Sarawak berminat lompat parti

MIRI 17 Sept.

MCA: Journalist's detention unwarranted

The recent detention of journalist Tan Hoon Cheng for 18 hours under the Internal Security Act (ISA) was totally unwarranted and the reasons provided for this are unacceptable.

This was the stand taken by Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition party MCA at its central committee meeting yesterday.

Party president Ong Ka Ting said this after chairing the discussion which lasted some six hours, and covered the latest development relating to ISA arrests among other issues.

tan hoon chengTan, 33, a Sin Chew Daily journalist based in Penang was freed following immediate uproar by fellow-journalists, activists and prominent politicians including ministers from the BN camp.

Ong said the central committee also held the consensus view that the party should convey to the government some of the decisions made at the meeting.

“To prevent possible future abuse of the ISA, the MCA central committee calls for a comprehensive review of the ISA so that it will apply strictly to cases relating to terrorism and subversive elements,” he said.

Ong said the party leaders also decided that “there should also be a mechanism for checks and balances in the use of the ISA”.

teresa kok and raja petra isa arrestFurther to those decisions, the committee felt the party should also urge the government to release Selangor DAP exco member Teresa Kok and MalaysiaToday editor and blogger Raja Petra, both of whom were detained under the ISA last Friday.

“... they can be investigated under other laws and be charged in court if the evidence justifies this,” Ong noted.

On Pakatan Rakyat chief Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement and false impression that he would wrest the federal government from BN, Ong said the purported deadline of Sept 16 had caused the public to become “jittery and worried”.

anwar ibrahim and september 16 event“The meeting expressed deep disappointment and displeasure over recent speculation, rumours and lies by Anwar (left) on claims of political crossovers (from BN parties),” he said.

“It was irresponsible and had caused fear among many members of the public. They asked whether there was any truth to this and many dared not leave their homes. He has cried wolf many times and they (Pakatan) are making fools out of everybody.

“Many no longer believe him. This has caused undue worry among foreign investors (who are losing confidence) in our country.”

'Reveal Names Of MCA Reps"

Responding to a question on possible crossover by MCA parliamentarians, Ong took another swipe at the Pakatan leadership.

“If he has the numbers and the political strength, he should just go ahead. There is no necessity for him to cry wolf so many times, Ong said.

ong ka ting mca leaders pc 050808 02“Anwar has mentioned many times (that he has the numbers and there would be) crossovers by MCA and Umno leaders. Until now, he cannot provide any names because there is no truth to (the claims).”

Ong (left) also said Anwar should name the (MCA leaders) intending to defect.

“What is so secret about this…since he (Anwar) talks so much about transparency?”

On the Wisma MCA building, Ong said the party now wholly owns the premises following recent acquisition of the remaining 20.3 percent equity in Wisma MCA Sdn Bhd from Koperasi Jayadiri Malaysia Bhd for a total consideration of RM27.6 million.

The sale and purchase agreement signed on Aug 15 was priced on a willing buyer-willing seller basis after taking into account the current market value of Wisma MCA based on a professional evaluation.

Setahun Selepas Pemergian Nurin Jazlin

"Kak long selalu cakap, 'kalau buka puasa kak ngah ada tentu seronok'.

If Anwar takes over...

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 - It's all systems go for D-Day.

That is the declaration opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made at a Pakatan Rakyat rally two nights ago.

He claimed his coalition -has the numbers- to gain control of Parliament yesterday - a date he had declared would be the deadline for his government takeover bid.

He said he has submitted a letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yesterday seeking a meeting for a smooth transition of power.

-A peaceful transition is paramount,- he told Malaysiakini.

For several months, Anwar has signalled Sept 16 as the day he would get 30 MPs to defect to his side.

But while Anwar appeared to be brimming with confidence in front of the crowds chanting -Reformasi-, things weren't so sure.

Earlier on Monday, he conceded to the Asian Wall Street Journal that his personal target is -within September-.

Another date ~ Sept 20 - was even bandied around.

That is the date Anwar was arrested 10 years ago, after falling out with the then-Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Malaysian Insider calls Sept 16 -the beginning of a transformation- for Anwar.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat strategist Saifuddin Nasution insisted that -we never talked about defections, merely support-.

The party's official line on it is that Sept 16 will kick-start a change of government, with only technical matters to be resolved after.

But whether he actually gains power or not, analysts, politicians and the man-in-the-street feel there will be repercussions.

Malaysian political analyst Gavin Khoo feels it is not a matter of if, but when.

He said: -Sept 16 is just symbolic. The desire to change is far more important than just meeting the deadline.-

Even opposition veteran Lim Kit Siang felt that change itself is a different matter.

He told The Star: -If you compare now to six months ago, around 70 to 80 per cent of the people are now saying it is possible to change.-

Should an Anwar-led government be in power, analysts like Mohd Nawab Mohd Osman, from the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, do not expect major overhauls.

Just tweaks to the system such as the NEP - the 1971 affirmative action plan that favours the Malays.

After all, Mohd Nawab reasons that Anwar's formative years were in Umno.

Even economics reforms such as review of rising costs, which many Malaysians cite as one of the issues for their swing against the Barisan Nasional, may only have an impact on the public next year, notes ex-DAP MP James Wong.

Wong believes that if Anwar's takeover succeeds, -there will be politicking and confusion on society and within Umno-.

Echoing this sentiment, Khoo even went as far as to say that he believes that Umno -can expect a major exodus-.

If that happens, Umno can go either way, notes Dr Ooi Kee Beng of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Iseas).

Umno would either -accept their loss or encourage violence- to undermine the new government.

Ooi also expects the new government to be a lot more mulitracial in tone.

He said: -It will have to be Malay-led so that protests from Umno people will be quietened... NEP thinking will change, going from Malay-centric to Malaysian-centric, in words if not in action, to start with.-

Khoo added that the only way for Umno to recover is for it to work with the good leaders within its ranks and be truly multiracial in its approach.

Analysts also say they expect Umno and its BN counterparts to be doing a lot of rethinking and restrategising.

BN, said Ooi, will never be able to -regain its strength or dominance and will have to reorganise itself-.

Mohd Nawab expects Abdullah's position to continue to remain fragile, with him perceived as ineffectual leader.

He could possibly be booted out sooner than the 2010 target of handing over power to his deputy, Datuk Najib Abdul Razak.

But are voters actually prepared for an Anwar government?

Ooi said: -When they voted, they wished to teach Barisan Nasional a lesson. But now, once their revolt had been realised, I think they wish to go all the way.-

Yet, that may not happen, despite what Anwar says.

His takeover claims were immediately panned by Abdullah and other Barisan Nasional leaders, reported The Star.

Abdullah called the opposition's plans -a nuisance- and -preposterous-.

Some BN MPs have also voiced out that merely forming a government by getting MPs to defect is immoral and undemocratic.

Datuk Seri Pairin Kitingan told Bernama that toppling the government this way is denying the people's majority decision and suggested a law against party-hopping.

Even DAP chairman Karpal Singh called defections a betrayal of voters' trust.

Added Malaysian teacher Mohd Izran Mohd Al-Amin, 23: -It's very obvious that old choices of systems of governance definitely has to change, but not this way (through defections).-

Should Anwar's takeover eventually fail, Mohd Nawab believes it will really hurt PKR's confidence.

He said: -I think that many within the PKR are not entirely convinced that Anwar can galvanise enough BN MPs to defect.

-As such, the likeliest result of a failure is business as usual in PKR.

A Solidarity To ISA

Rajeshvari demands apology from Immigration

IPOH: Young mother M. Rajeshvari, who was recently released from the Lenggeng Immigration depot for illegals in Negri Sembilan, wants an apology from the department’s director-general for her wrongful detention.

Perak Health, Environment and Human Resources Committee chairman A. Sivanesan relayed Rajeshvari’s demand during a press conference yesterday as she is not fluent in Bahasa Malaysia.

He said it had been two weeks since Rajeshvari’s release, but department director-general Datuk Mahmud Adam had been “dead silent” on the matter.

“There is no apology, offer of compensation or visit to her Kampar house to explain her wrongful detention,” he told reporters yesterday.

It was reported that Rajeshvari spent 11 agonising months at the depot because she could not recall her MyKad number and was not fluent in Bahasa Malaysia.

The 22-year-old, who was six months pregnant then, was waiting for a relative at a coffeeshop in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, when a raiding police party asked to see her MyKad.

She failed to produce her MyKad as she had lost it.

Noting that Rajeshvari planned to sue the department, Sivanesan said the police officer and Immigration Department officer involved in her arrest and subsequent detention should come forward and explain.

Urging the department to check all detention depots in the country, Sivanesan said he feared that Rajeshvari’s case could be just the tip of the iceberg.

Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran, who was also present, said when Rajeshvari was charged in court, she was not given an interpreter who could converse in Tamil nor was she given any legal representation.

“It is the court’s duty to provide an accused with an interpreter and a lawyer,” he said.

Zaid to attend “Free Teresa Kok” caucus meeting

Sassy MP

Zaid Ibrahim to attend - “Free MP Teresa Kok” parliamentary caucus inaugural meeting tomorrow

MP for Batu Gajah, Fong Po Kuan, co-ordinating secretary convening the inaugural meeting of the “Free MP Teresa Kok” parliamentary caucus in Parliament tomorrow (Wednesday 17.9.08) at 3 p.m. has informed me that Datuk Zaid Ibrahim will attend.

I phoned up Zaid from Kota Kinabalu where I am attending a Sabah DAP forum “Malaysia - Towards a New Era” and the first Minister in the nation’s history to have resigned from the Cabinet on a point of principle confirmed his concern for the incarceration of MP Teresa Kok under the Internal Security Act (ISA) and that he would attend the meeting of the proposed “Free MP Teresa Kok” parliamentary caucus.

I hope to see Barisan Nasional Ministers and MPs, as well as the Speaker and Deputy Speakers, attending the meeting to demonstrate the maturity of the Malaysian Parliament where Parliamentarians can distinguish between parliamentary and party considerations and unite on a single footing to advance the cause of a first-world Malaysian Parliament.

Zaid blames Cabinet, Umno members for opposing judiciary reforms

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Zaid Ibrahim will not change his mind about quitting as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, saying he has failed to reform the legal system.

He said he constantly met “a brick wall” from Cabinet members and Umno to many of his suggestions for reform.

The former de facto Law Minister, who remains a Senator, added he did not want problems arising from his proposals to plague Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at a time when the latter was grappling with party conflicts and other challenges.

Zaid thanked Abdullah for suggesting he go on leave but said: “I am not tired. I’m just disappointed.”

He said he prayed Abdullah would remain Umno president and Prime Minister and accomplish what he had set out to do.

“I apologise to all Malaysians because of my weaknesses, I have failed,” he said in a 40-minute press conference at his office here yesterday.

“It has not been a mistake to take up the offer,” he stressed.

Asked why he was giving up when he had bluntly told journalists just in May that they should go on fighting for media freedom despite the obstacles over the past 20 years, Zaid said: “Maybe I’m not as courageous as you are. I agree change does take time but I was looking for some positive development to give me assurance.”

He maintained Abdullah had been supportive “within his own constraints.”

Asked whether Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim - if he formed a new Government - would be able to bring reform to the judiciary, Zaid replied: “He hasn’t formed the Government. It doesn’t matter whether the Prime Minister is Abdullah, Datuk Seri Najib (Tun Razak), Tengku Razaleigh (Ham-zah), (Tan Sri) Muyhiddin (Yassin) or Anwar. I don’t care; I just want to see transformation.”

Describing himself as a “man of deep responsibility”, Zaid lamented that in the six months he had been Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, he had suffered accusations of not standing up for Malays and Muslims and other criticisms in Parliament.

Naming Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman as one of his critics, Zaid rebutted :

“You can still be a champion for your race and think of the country.”

He said he tried but had failed to convince those in power to effect changes related to equality as prescribed in the Federal Constitution, so the Government could move forward.

Zaid had tendered his resignation to Abdullah on Monday.

In his letter, he had listed his frustrations in trying to achieve the reforms he had been tasked with doing; the final being the recent arrest of three people under the Internal Security Act.

Asked whether the public should give up on Abdullah’s promise for judicial reform since he - the person specifically tasked with achieving it - had resigned, he replied: “I don’t think everything should be pegged to me. I am not a hero. Someone else might be more acceptable.”

Asked whether he would leave Umno for opposition party PKR, Zaid admitted he had not been “treated well” by Umno - he was even suspended once on charges of money politics.

He said he had not decided on joining “PKR or anybody else,” adding he had not been courted.

Asked whether he had advice for the Government, Zaid said it must start trusting its own people.

“If not, you will always worry which policy benefits which group. You can have a race-based party but you don’t have to be racist bigots,” he said on his last day in office.

Perubahan Pimpinan Penting Untuk Pulih Ekonomi

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 16 ~ Whether the Pakatan Rakyat forms a new government today is not the main issue at stake in trying to revive flagging economic growth.

Instead, market and political analysts believe any change of leadership will provide a fillip to the economy and boost investor confidence.

"In terms of qualification and intelligence, the most qualified person to become prime minister is Najib," an economist with a local investment bank who requested anonymity told The Malaysian Insider, referring to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

"He has an economics background, and in terms of getting into and understanding issues, he is in a better state than the prime minister.-

The rising cost of living and the slowing down in economic growth have become a major issue affecting politics, with Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's government swiftly losing popularity due to high oil prices.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's constant threats to topple the ruling Barisan Nasional government, and challenges from within Umno against Abdullah, have also undermined investor confidence.

Earlier this month, financial services group Credit Suisse told investors worldwide in a report to avoid buying stocks in Malaysia.

Credit Suisse pointed out that the power struggle between Anwar and the government was heightening risks to the Malaysian economy.

Tricia Yeoh, an economist attached to the Centre for Public Policy Studies, said Malaysia needed a leader to get rid of institutionalised weaknesses.

"The best leader is the leader who can get rid of corruption and one who can transform the economy in light of the current slowdown."

Another market analyst said Abdullah's reputation for "flip-flop'' - policy reversals - also did not inspire confidence.

"This kind of flip-flop does not bode well for investors with regards to strategies," he said.

The only thing that appears certain at this point is that Abdullah is no longer seen as a viable candidate to remain as prime minister for much longer.

Said Dr Ooi Kee Beng, political analyst with the Singapore-based Institute of South-East Asian Studies (Iseas): "Where Abdullah is concerned, he should retire. He was given the mandate five years ago and he failed."

"Apabila Najib menjadi Perdana Menteri, beliau mestilah kena dapatkan sokongan semua pihak.

Khak Ptuih..! Kepala Pak hang la Dolah...

I may not be the best muslim, but I'll do my best for Islam...

Assalamua'laikum to all.

Panel JKD menyatakan tindakan saya mungkin terlalu agresif.

I'll be their worst nightmare if they continue with their arrogance and anti-Islam attitude.

Saya nyatakan bahawa nothing can stand between me and Islam.

Saya mengulangi pendirian dan prinsip saya bahawa 'for me, Islam come first, the rest are second'.

The ball is now in their hand to make the necessary recommendations to the Political bureau of PKR.

In the meantime, saya akan berlepas untuk mengerjakan umrah 18 Ramadhan/ 18 Sep ini.

I have to do a very serious thinking as to my future role as MP.

Adios..

Anwar Berbohong Kepada Rakyat Malaysia, Kata Pemimpin Parti Politik

TP - Sah...orang UMNO sendiri pun mati-mati percaya & yakin peralihan kuasa September 16... bila rancangan tak tercapai, pakat-pakat merah kat DSAI... hehehe...

Insya Allah
