Anwar: 'Saya tak cukup dana kempen pilihan raya'

Dewan Undangan Negeri. Maka bila jadi amalan demokratik, berkempenlah.
Beliau mengulas kejadian jurugambar Kumpulan New Straits Times Press (M) Berhad (NSTP) Mohd Sairen Mohd Nafis, 26, dan Halim Berbar dari HBL Press News di Perancis diserang sekumpulan lelaki dekat pusat penamaan calon di perkarangan Institut Tuanku Bainun, Mengkuang dekat sini semalam.

6 kotak rahsia masih dipegang Anwar - Ezam

PERMATANG PAUH: Di mana enam kotak rahsia sekarang?

Isu enam kotak berahsia menjadi fokus pertanyaan banyak pihak khususnya selepas

Ketua Angkatan Muda Keadilan PKR, Shamsul Iskandar Mohd. Akin berkata, beliau dimaklumkan Zulkifli sedang bercuti.

Najib slams rude opposition

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 18 — Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak criticised the attitude of members of the opposition parties, claiming that they were rude to national leaders in campaigning for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the opposition parties had engaged groups to shout and show lewd signs at Barisan Nasional leaders and followed these leaders wherever they went.

"The opposition did not show any respect to their opponents. Is this the image of the party that wants to rule the country?" he said when visiting the BN Youth main operations room here last night.

Nonetheless, he said, Umno Youth was still in high spirits as it treated the action by the opposition as a challenge.

On the swearing on the Quran by Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, a former aide to Parti Keadilan Rakyat advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which was said to be not in accordance with the Islamic way, Najib said everyone should respect the move taken by Saiful as it was aimed at protecting his interest.

He said the swearing process was determined by the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department and it was carried out after the Asar prayers beside the pulpit while holding up the Quran.

"So, who says the process was not correct. Actually, there are people who are panicking and feel pressured to the extent of entering a foreign mission," he said.

Pas spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat on Saturday described the swearing and holding of the Quran by Saiful as not in accordance with the Islamic way and that it emulated the act of Christians who swore by holding their Bible.

Campaign deja vu in Permatang Pauh

Anwar begins his campaign in Sg. Lembu.

PERMATANG PAUH, Aug 17 - Five months and a week after casting their votes in the March 8 general elections, the 50,000-odd voters in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency are telling the same stories while hearing the same promises.

Only the candidates' list is different.

And one of them, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim - who used to be their MP from 1982 until 1999 when he was convicted for corruption -says his victory will help him be Prime Minister that will fulfill his promises and their desires.

The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate wasted no time in going to the ground after the nomination process which resulted in a three-cornered fight for this rural enclave in mainland Penang.

The other two candidates are Barisan Nasional's Arif Shah Omar Shah - who is Seberang Jaya state assemblyman - and Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia (Akim) president Hanafi Mamat. Akim is a splinter of Parti Islam SeMalaysia (Pas) - Anwar's ally in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition that rules Penang.

With the three fighting it out to represent them in Parliament, the residents and voters seemed spoilt for choice as they spoke about the rising costs of day-to-day life and marginalisation after 50 years of Merdeka.

None spoke of the primacy of culture, Islamic values or the high electricity reserve capacity by utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad due to unfair contracts with independent power producers - a point the former deputy prime minister had been repeating when promising to cut pump prices.

In the working class neighbourhood of Kampung Bagan Serai in Seberang Jaya, he had tea with the villagers, mainly ethnic Indians. He was accompanied by Padang Serai MP, N. Gobalakrishnan, who promised to the crowd that they would be voting in the next prime minister.

Anwar himself alluded to that promise as he likened himself to a Tamil film hero who is out of prison and ready to rescue te downtrodden from evil landlords or gangsters.

"Today we form the government, tomorrow we will release the Hindraf detainees," he said to loud cheers as he repeated his promise to repeal the Internal Security Act (ISA) and free all detainees from Kamunting be it Hindus or Muslims.

Most Indians voted against the BN after the government detained five Hindraf (Hindru Rights Action Force) leaders involved in a huge protest in Kuala Lumpur last November.

The PKR leader's promise resonated with the villagers.Mageswary Balan, 23, a housewife and a mother of two kids said she has been an Anwar fan since young.

"Anwar has helped us a lot. I am sure he will do more," she said without elaborating. Not surprising as Mageswary was born born and raised in the village, located some two km away from the most developed part of Seberang Jaya when Anwar was already MP.

"I know Anwar likes to help the poor, and when he becomes the prime minister not only he will solve the problems faced by the Indians, he will also save the whole country," said 21-year-old factory worker Mariappa Manoharan.

Data entry clerk, Vellu Balan, 25, might not have read the Anwar's economic agenda, but he knows the Pakatan Rakyat policies from friends and relatives.

"Others can come here and campaign and promise a lot of things, but I know they will not deliver, only Anwar can do it," said Vellu, who was among the 200 villagers crowding the ceramah and shouting Merdeka to encourage the charismatic politician.

As day turned to dusk, Anwar stopped at an isolated new village near the Penang-Kedah border, in Sungai Lembu where hundreds of his admirers waited to have dinner with the PKR candidate.

They were no different from the crowd in Kampung Bagan Serai. "Anwar is good, I know, I read a lot about him on the newspapers" said Foo Koi Ene, 60, who could not wait to hear Anwar's speech and to eventually put him in Parliament.

And although she is not eligible to vote, 21-year-old account clerks Low Yean Siew hopes Anwar can alleviate escalating cost of living, when he comes to power.

"I like Anwar, as I believe he can reduce the petrol price. He sounds very convincing," she said.

Pump prices was uppermost in the minds of the mainly Chinese crowd here. "I have to work very hard now that it may lead to death," said car accessories salesman, Boon Chai Wong, 24. "If petrol price is reduced our business will be better."

Anwar used plain words to explain his promises to the standing room only crowd at the ceramah, most of whom applauding warmly when he touched on equality, quality of the education system and national unity.

With a smile, the wildly popular politician who last contested the seat on a BN ticket ended his speech by saying, "I am so happy to see some of the villagers here who used to be with Gerakan or MCA."

Shafee to RPK: Face me in court

Shafee Abdullah makes a forceful rebuttal to RPK's allegations at his KL office today. — pictures by Choo Choy May

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 -- Lawyer Datuk Muhammad Shafee Abdullah filed police reports against blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin at 6.30pm today for a series of offences ranging from criminal defamation to sedition. Earlier, he charged that Raja Petra made racist statements and allowed commenters to post vulgarities on his website.

Raja Petra, however, has already been charged for those offences and the latest laundry list is not expected to faze him.

"He made racist statements and allowed commenters on his blog to make vulgarities. That's why I consider him to be a common pariah. A full-blooded royal would never allow vulgarities to be published," Shafee said to reporters this morning at his Bukit Tunku office here.

"Raja Petra does not have an open blog site which allows for free debate. He moderates his blog site. He only publishes what he likes to publish. He's a typical coward. He claims to want an open society and rule of law.

"If he's daring enough... come and face me in court, face me before a tribunal. If he has no money, I will pay."

Shafee added that he was even willing to let Raja Petra have his pick of which judge should preside over the trial if the latter wished, in order that the trial could begin right away.

"Nobody has ever taken him on. I want this trial to go on as quickly as possible," said Shafee.

Or if he were court-shy, Shafee said, they could settle their dispute through other channels, such as before an independent arbitration council with members of the panel selected by both of them.

"I want to expose and throw a challenge to Raja Petra. He's a total fraud, a media fraud and a villain. I am compelling him to disclose the names of his commenters. This is the way cowards operate.

"Don't you think that's the cruelest thing to do to any man? You allege against him but don't want to come forth and say why. If only Raja Petra will stand out as a man and not a coward."

Shafee had filed a defamation suit against Raja Petra last week for publishing an article that named him as the mastermind behind the latest sodomy allegation against former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Shafee hotly denied the allegation and said that Raja Petra had targeted him based on rumours after the Sodomy II incident.

Apparently, there were whispers that Shafee would be appointed the prosecution for the case against Anwar.

"I heard the same rumours. Raja Petra is not a clever fellow. This article was meant to disqualify me from standing as prosecutor. The funny thing is, this rumour is not true," Shafee explained.

He also elaborated that prior to this incident, there was no animosity between him and Raja Petra. "He is a puppet for some political animal. As we say: 'Baling batu, sembunyi tangan'," Shafee added, quoting a Malay proverb.

Last Friday, Shafee served the court orders for Raja Petra to remove the offending article and comments from his website or face legal action.

However, Raja Petra claimed that Shafee had acted in contempt of court for serving him the summons in a courtroom.

An incensed Shafee today responded that Raja Petra was the last person who should lecture him on what constituted contempt of court.

"You cannot serve in a court when the court is in session, when the judges and counsel are speaking. But a courtroom itself has no magic. Raja Petra is the last person to lecture me on contempt of court. He does not know what contempt of court means."

Bad day for BN

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 — Away from the intense by-election campaign in Permatang Pauh, it was a bad Sunday for Barisan Nasional.

Today alone, a component party mulled the idea or pulling out of the coalition, a fomer division leader brought along 1,500 members to join the opposition and yet another Umno branch claimed money politics and intimidation.

Perak Gerakan wants the party to leave BN, claiming its leaders - Umno chiefs - are only interested in one particular community.

The state committee, claiming that 80 per cent of delegates supported the motion, is expected to bring the matter up at the Gerakan annual meeting this October.

Perak Gerakan chief Datuk Chang Ko Youn, who was re-elected as state chief at the party conference here, said the delegates were unhappy with certain politicians playing up race and religious issues.

"This is not good for the country, We cannot accept this. Gerakan practises a non-racial and non-religious approach," the Gerakan national vice-president told The Star.

In Klang, former MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu's blue-eyed boy Alex Thiagarasan today joined DAP with his supporters. Samy Vellu sacked the former Klang MIC division chief last month.

"I am proud to have joined the DAP and will continue to serve the local community. I invite people who need my services to see me at the service centre in Jalan Teluk Pulai here," he said.

Following his report with the police and the Anti-Corruption Agency against Samy Vellu over alleged abuse of funds, he was sacked on July 7.

Samy Vellu, who filed a RM10 million suit against Thiagarasan, also obtained an injunction against him from repeating the allegation.

In Kota Baru, an Umno branch chief lodged a report with the ACA, claiming that some people were intimidating members and using money to prevent de facto Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim from being nominated as Kota Baru division chief.

Zaid, who was the division head until his suspension, is reclaiming his position against acting chief Datuk Mohd Fatmi Salleh.

According to Bernama, after 80 per cent of the 116 branches held their meetings, Zaid who had obtained 19 nominations needs another five to qualify for contest. Fatmi has passed the quota.

Press release by Shafee Abdullah

On the 6th, 7th, and 12th August 2008, Raja Petra published the 3 defamatory articles on me with other commenters publishing their comments following the 3 defamatory articles. All of the commenters are equally guilty of defamation and various offences of vulgarities under the Penal Code.

The Raja Petra website is a controlled website, meaning it is a moderated website. He chooses through that system to publish or not any article or comment posted on the blog site. He is therefore a publisher of all the articles and comments posted on his blog site and is therefore guilty of publishing, accommodating and adopting the contents as his. He has committed the offences of defamation, sedition and other offences in the Penal Code and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Raja Petra does not practise an open blog site. He only publishes materials that support him. All other materials that are critical of him or condemn him are not published. He is not interested in an open debate for alternative views. His claim that his website is a source of independent news is total nonsense. Clearly this blogger is a coward and one that hides behind his blog ( and as you can see in court last Friday, one that hides behind his wife as well) Any so called “Royalty” (as Raja Petra claims himself to be) who indulges in publishing vulgar statements over and above being defamatory ought to be ashamed of himself as his behaviour evidenced in the blog site is that of a common “pariah”.

I am lodging a police report today for offences committed by Raja Petra which are as follows:

(a) Criminal Defamation;

(b) Sedition under the Sedition Act 1948;

(c) Offences under the Penal Code for vulgarities;

(d) Offences under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998; and

(e) Printing Presses and Publication Act 1984

The Order of the High Court has been officially served on him on the 15th of August 2008. But before this Raja Petra was aware of the contents of the Order dated 13th August 2008 as admitted by him in his article on the 14th itself. Under the law he should have obeyed the Order of Court counting from the 14th itself. I am monitoring closely if Raja Petra is complying with each and every order that the court has imposed against him. If he does not observe any of these orders, I will compel him to be produced in court for contempt of court. I will continue to do this for every contemptious act he commits and if the contempt continues I will make repeated applications for contempt against him. If the court of Appeal could find it sufficient to send Murray Hiebert, a bona fide journalist to jail in Malaysia, the crimes committed by Raja Petra would be far worse. Raja Petra is not a bona fide journalist or an independent news provider. He is truly a puppet of some political animal. Raja Petra’s website is a political propaganda website and Raja Petra is the chief puppet.

This year alone 2 successful defamation suits have been taken against Raja Petra. The cases are :

(a) Universiti Utara Malaysia & Vice Chancellor Tan Sri Dr Nordin Kardin v Raja Petra, where a defamation suit was taken against Raja Petra. Raja Petra never entered appearance nor defended the case. On 26th March 2008, Raja Petra was ordered to pay RM4 million as damages to the Plaintiffs. He has failed to pay the RM4 million. Raja Petra is a bankrupt and has been declared a bankrupt for quite sometime. As you know, an honourable bankrupt must defend his reputation about his credibility. Raja Petra never defended his credibility. He is not just a common bankrupt. He is also bankrupt of credibility and ideas.

(b) The case of Dato Seri Azim Zabidi v Raja Petra, a Kuala Lumpur High Court suit. Again judgment in default of appearance has been taken against him. The Plaintiff in that case has applied for damages to be assessed by the court. And the damages sum would soon be announced by the Court. Tell me why isn’t Raja Petra defending these suits? I suggest there is only one reason : he has no defence and he knows his stories are all propaganda and has no nexus to truth.

The above precedent cases show that:

(a) Raja Petra is a coward in not defending the defamation suits against him.

(b) If he claims he can justify the contents of all his writings, the public deserves to know the truth and he should not behave like a coward and not come to court and prove his case.

(c) I challenge him to consent to our case being expedited for trial so that the public will know the truth whether Raja Petra is a liar or not. The court is the best forum to adjudicate on the conflict. In fact, alternatively, if Raja Petra wants an independent arbitration on this matter, with independent arbitrators chosen by a joint consent between him and me, I will gladly accept it and challenge him to produce the proofs of his allegations.

We are concerned that Raja Petra thinks that being a bankrupt he does not have any obligations to law and society. This is perhaps the reason why he is so dishonest and reckless as to what he publishes. If he thinks he can hide behind his bankruptcy, he is dead wrong. So far the conduct of Raja Petra clearly shows that his sole motive is to do propaganda and truth was never his consideration at all.

For your information, I can conclusively show Raja Petra is a total liar I have independent evidence, both oral and documentary, that will show neither the office of Shafee & Co nor this conference room you are sitting in or the whiteboard you are looking at or I personally are involved in anything close to the allegation by Raja Petra that we are involved in a conspiracy relating to the case of the sodomy allegation by Saiful against Anwar Ibrahim. Raja Petra will have to show his so-called evidence. He bluffs by saying he has got 6 witnesses 3 of them are datuks apparently. And I urge him that if he has that evidence, he must quickly agree for an expedited trial of this matter as the public deserves nothing less than the truth. If Raja Petra is found to be lying to the public he must be stopped fast so that the public is not misled.

For your information, I have been away in Kuching and Terengganu for more than 6 weeks prior to Anwar Ibrahim being charged, I was away from the 28 June 2008 until 7th August 2008 continuously with one week in Kuala Terengganu (all of them related to my work in relation to 3 Election Petitions). How could I be in this room to mastermind the operation with the police.

Why should the police want to do a black operation in this room? Don’t you think a black operation by its nature is secretive ? Should such an operation be done in this open conference room ? That is the reason I say even a person with a pea-sized brain would not believe his story. Raja Petra is not a clever bluffer. I would love to cross-examine him in court and I would offer myself to be cross-examined by his team of lawyers if this is the only way truth can be revealed.

I will tell him to stop being the coward he is. Come out into the open, in the open court and fight me like a man and not to hide behind his web site or behind the skirt of his wife.

Dato’ Muhammad Shafee Abdullah

PKR has no permits for ceramahs, says police

I visited the Police HQ in Bukit Mertajam today with my ‘mainstream’ reporter friends. Looks like the police force has joined the battle for Permatang Pauh. Whose side are they on? You can definitely tell, in the coming days.

Their press conference was about two things: police permit for ceramahs (political talks) and the violence against photographers allegedly by PAKATAN RAKYAT supporters.

It goes like this:

Police will be taking action on the parties that do not apply for permits for ceramahs in Permatang Pauh.

SUPT Shaharon Anuar Abdul Latif, who is media relations officer for the Seberang Perai Tengah Police HQ said that out of 8 ceramahs during the P44 campaign period, only 5 were legal, and all of them were BN ceramahs.

PKR has yet to apply, let alone have permits for their ceramahs, and the police will be investigating the matter under section 27 of the Police Act for illegal gathering.

The police seem very involved in this campaign, with the media relations department, organising briefing every day at 11.30am at the HQ.

It seems they are putting that RM4 mil to good use (expenditure on this by-election alone from the police side), with lots of FRU trucks stationed at strategic places around the P44 area.

Shaharon also brief the reporters about yesterday’s aggression by PKR supporters towards two reporters, one from NST, and the other from French news agency, BHL press news.

He said no arrest had been made yet, and tried his best to sound professional by not naming which party supporters were involved in the attack.

‘Police are currently trying to identify the attackers,” said Shaharon, adding that they were investigating the case under section 148 of the Police Act, using the photographs taken by the complainant during the scuffle at the nomination centre (Tengku Bainun) yesterday.

In an immediate response today, PP candidate and PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim accused the mainstream media (RTM) for immediately apportioning the blame on the party.

“I say let us investigate and punish those perpetrators irrespective of whether they are from PAKATAN RAKYAT or BARISAN NASIONAL,” he said at a press conference today.

“My point is the mainstreatm media is at fault for presenting a biased case, not only that, but malicious attack (against PKR)”.

A reporter asked if gangsterism is prevalent in PKR.

“Where are you from? Berita Harian says that gangsterism is prevalent in PKR. When Khairy Jamaluddin and gang threw bottles (at us in Ijok), it is not wrong.

“This Berita Harian culture must be corrected. This is slander and traitorous. We oppose corruption and cruelty. This must be corrected. If there is evidence that it is PKR or Pakatan person(s), they won’t be left off the hook,” added Anwar.
