Pirates seize Malaysian tanker off Somalia's coast

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A global maritime watchdog says pirates have seized a Malaysian tanker and its crew of more than 20 off Somalia's coast in the Gulf of Eden.

Noel Choong, head of the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting center in Kuala Lumpur, says the center picked up a distress signal late Tuesday. He says the center immediately notified Western naval ships patrolling the area.

Choong said Wednesday that a warship has been sent to intercept the tanker, which is heading toward Somalia territorial waters.

He says that this is the fourth hijacking in Somalia within a month.

He says the tanker is carrying palm oil and was headed from Indonesia to Europe when it was attacked. It was unclear when the raid took place.
