Umno leader slain in gangland killing

BAGAN SERAI: A sub-contractor and local Umno leader was shot dead at close range outside SMK Gunung Semanggol in Bukit Merah here.

Taib Ali, 61, had dropped off his two daughters at the school at 7.20am yesterday and was about to drive away when two men wearing full-face helmets rode up to his car and a shot was heard.

Bagan Serai OCPD Supt Fauzi Mat Nayan confirmed Taib was shot in the head at close range. Taib died on the spot, Supt Fauzi told a press conference at the Simpang Empat Semanggol police station.

A bullet fragment was found inside the car, while a spent bullet casing was found outside.

At about 11.30am, police found the motorcycle used by the assailants abandoned near a water treatment plant at Jalan Kampung Selamat, Bukit Putus, about 5km from the school.

Two crash helmets, a black long-sleeved shirt and black T-shirt were also recovered.

Supt Fauzi appealed for witnesses to come forward and contact the acting district crime division chief Insp Mohamad Shamsul Irwan Hashim at 019-243 5981 or the Bagan Serai police station at 05-721 2222.

Taib's widow, Lela Abdullah, 58, said she did not know of anyone who would want to kill her husband.

“He was a jovial person and was well-known as he had been the village chief for about 30 years,” said Lela from her home in Changkat Lobak.

Taib who is survived by Lela and 13 children was later buried at the Bukit Merah Muslim cemetery.

He was the Bukit Merah Umno deputy chairman and also branch chairman of Pekida, a Malay social welfare movement.
