The ringgit closed sharply lower against the US dollar in line with the weakening of Asian currencies against the greenback, dealers said.
Most Asian currencies eased against the US dollar, as investors took a cautious stand amid uncertainty in the US auto bailout plans anticipating a possible negative impact on the global automotive sector.
The ringgit weakened against the US dollar to 3.5800/5850 from 3.5590/5640 yesterday.
It also eased against Asian currencies, declining against the Singapore dollar to 2.3963/4015 from 2.3820/3884 and against the yen at 3.9619/9697 from 3.8551/8622 previously.
The local unit was also lower against the British pound at 5.3188/3284 from 5.3097/3182 and against the euro at 4.7539/7620 from 4.6605/6681.
